Exploring the world of corporate sponsorship

Unlike private foundation grants, corporate sponsorships typically come with fewer administrative burdens.  However, nonprofit leaders often fail to bear in mind that  sponsorship is a business deal, not a donation, and that successfully seeking sponsorships involves a set of skills that is quite different from other  types of fundraising.  This seminar will introduce you to the world of corporate sponsorships, and help you understand what sponsors are looking for when they decide to partner with you on on a project.  In particular, we will explore how to make corporate sponsorships a win-win deal for both sides.

The session will also cover the following topics:
  • An overview of the world of corporate sponsorship: understanding why companies invest in nonprofit organizations
  • Evaluating your organization's culture: is it ready for corporate sponsorship?
  • Structuring a sponsorship proposal: establishing the fit between your organization and the sponsor?
  • Engaging with sponsors: how to stimulate sponsor interest in your nonprofit
  • Closing the deal: the steps needed to get to the signed contract
Attendees will come away with the understanding that their organization is not only a charitable cause, but also a valuable marketing partner.

Kurt Aschermann

Kurt Aschermann is President of the Charity Partners Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts. Aschermann was formerly Chief Marketing and Development Officer at Boys & Girls Clubs of America where he and his team were responsible for forging some of the largest alliances ever with major corporations to benefit a non-profit organization: Microsoft ($100 million), Coca-Cola ($60 million), and Major League Baseball (Official Charity status) are examples of the many partnerships they developed. Aschermann was the architect of the reorganization plan of the National Board of Governors of Boys & Girls Clubs of America in the mid-1990’s. The Board was recently recognized by Worth magazine as one of the Best Boards in America. Boys & Girls Clubs’ fund-raising increased from approximately $300 million in 1990 to $1.2 billion in 2004.

In 1977, Arlene came to Boston as a Jesuit Volunteer to become a community organizer. She followed her year in the JVC with 2 years in VISTA. In 1996, after 20 years as a nonprofit executive and a Senior Advisor to Mayor Thomas Menino, Fortunato joined Citizens Bank as Senior Vice President, Director of Public Affairs. She was responsible for community relations, philanthropic giving, nonprofit partnerships. In 2003 Arlene formed Fortunato & Associates, helping nonprofits achieve their full potential through strategic fundraising, planning, leadership development and board building initiatives. Arlene taught in the Simmons Graduate School of Communication Management where she developed the Corporate Community Relations course and in the Urban Scholars program. Her advice is frequently sought by Democratic candidates and she was named 2002 AFP Development Professional of the Year, 2006 member of the YWCA Academy of Women Achievers and “Top 10 Executive Coaches” in Women’s Business Magazine.

Corey Lewis was named WBUR’s first Station Manager in February, 2005. As Station Manager, his primary responsibility is to ensure the financial health and long-term growth of WBUR as it relates to the station’s resources and audience services. Corey began his career at WBUR in 2002 as Director of Corporate Support. He was additionally made Director of Development in 2003. Prior to WBUR Corey spent 17 years working in commercial television for Paramount, Tribune, and USA in NY, Philadelphia, Hartford, Providence, and Boston.
