Social Media 102: Taking existing technologies to new levels

According to a recent Harvard Business Press book "Groundswell: winning in a world powered by social technologies," organizations of the Millennium will either be threatened by social media or be catapulted forward by it. The key to exploiting social media technologies is understanding how they can be used to your advantage, and using them before your opponents do. However, utilizing social media requires a completely different skill set than most Baby Boomers have developed. The good news is that the social media landscape can be traversed slowly and methodically, and when the journey starts, you will discover that, with little to no financial investment, social media can be a cost-effective way to promote your organization's mission and programs.

In this session, we will expand on our earlier Social Media session and cover new ways to use Social Media to accomplish the following:

-Enhance your existing online presence: using bloggers and Twitters to increase traffic to your website
-Increase your PR exposure: Social Media Relapses (SMR's) and other methods to get the message out to stakeholders
-Create a platform for viral marketing: Email management programs and other communication vehicles
-Build an online community: user-generated videos and blogs
-Keep your name in front of best supporters: community forums, listserves and discussion groups
-Measure your return on investment: evaluate your success using online peer reviews and other rating devices

You will leave this session with tips and tools to take your organization’s use of Social Media to the next level.

Speakers for this session:

Jay Johnson
Founding Partner
WorldLink Communications

Jay Johnson is a founding partner at WorldLink Communications, a full service public relations and communication strategy firm. As the lead social media consultant for WorldLink, Jay teaches non-profits, businesses, and entrepreneurs how to leverage new media to manage existing relationships, reach new prospects, and improve brand recognition. His background in organizational communication and public relations situates him as an expert in helping clients meet their outreach goals and objectives. Jay's recent certification from Wayne State as a Health Communications professional has led him to explore innovative ways health care practitioners utilize social media. Jay continues to apply his research and knowledge on social media's application in the health care industry, including working with public health campaigns. In 2009, Jay was honored with the Excellence in Training Award from the Association of Professional Communication Consultants for his work with ethnic minorities in the Greater Detroit area. He has earned a B.A. in Communication Studies, and a Certificate in Health Communications from Wayne State University. Jay is a member of Association of Professional Communication Consultants, Association of Business Communicators, and Vice President of the Redford Jaycees.

Santrise Webb

Santrise has 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. In her current position, she is responsible for development, marketing, and public relations where she orients non-profit professionals to social media and integrates cost-effective and innovative social media techniques to enhance organizational visibility. Santrise recently implemented a social media plan to reach BUILD's designated demographic population, enhance visibility, initiate sustainable online fund raising, and build email subscription lists. In the spirit of taking existing technologies to new levels, Santrise phased out the 41 year old organization's newsletter and annual report direct mailings to transition to e-newsletters and is enhancing the website to include savvy social technology. She also serves as a City Coordinator to enhance awareness for UNICEF's Tap Project and provides marketing, public relations, and fund raising services to multiple national organizations where she develops strategic internet campaigns to cultivate brand awareness amongst diverse demographic populations. Previously, she worked as an Executive and Consultant for companies that include: Quizno’s, Starbucks Coffee Company and Target Corporation where she created, implemented, and managed region specific marketing campaigns and trained personnel on social media integration. Santrise holds a BA in Political Science from Chicago State University and MPA from Roosevelt University.
