How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers
 

The relationship between grantmaker and grant seeker seems at first blush to contain a major power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. However, according to recent reports, grantmakers are coming to realize that the interests of both sides are met when  the playing field is more level. 

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grantmaker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face to face meetings: when should your pursue them and what should they be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the program officer to look at a more unconventional program
  • The program officer as advocate: how to convert a program officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When "no" means "not yet": turning a rebuff or a declination into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant seekers who understand the importance of relationship building with grantmakers, but have not yet figured out how to do it successfully.

Since 1993 Cynthia Close has been the Executive Director and currently is acting President of Documentary Educational Resources, (DER) a Watertown Massachusetts based non-profit film and video production/distribution company founded in 1968. DER distributes over 700 titles worldwide. Cynthia serves on the Board of Directors of the Society for Visual Anthropology, and the Margaret Mead International Film and Video Festival, NYC. She is on the Advisory Board of Women In Film and Video New England Chapter, The Camden International Film Festival, ARTVISION, INC. and AmericanInsight, Inc. She currently is acting as fiscal sponsor for over 25 documentary projects in production. Cynthia teaches a course in Funding and Selling the Documentary at the Maine International Film and Television Workshops. She has been a guest lecturer at the Boston University Program in Digital Media Arts; Emerson College, Harvard University & Lesley University, Cambridge; Temple University, Primary Source, Boston; and the University of

Maria Gudinas

A development professional for more than 12 years, Maria Gudinas has been working at the Merrimack Valley YMCA for the past five years. During her tenure, she’s gone from a “one person” shop to five today overseeing annual giving, grants and contracts, special events and capital campaigns. Maria writes and oversees the submission of more than 50 grants a year to both public and private entities increasing revenue from these sources from $256,000 in 03 to nearly $700,000 in 07. Her approach for each funding source is strategic and cultivated throughout the year. Previously, Maria was a Director of Resource Development for the United Way of Merrimack Valley. She began her development career at the YWCA of Greater Lawrence doubling their foundation revenue to nearly $300,000 in less than two years. Maria holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Suffolk University.

Paul Haible has worked in the public foundation sector of the foundation community for thirty years, serving as development director, volunteer, board member, technical consultant and executive director. He is a co-founder of the Funding Exchange, worked at Vanguard Public Foundation for twelve years, with the Indigenous Environmental Network, and served on the boards of Seva Foundation and Peace Development Fund, among others, and currently is a delegate for the Rigoberta Menchu Tum Foundation at the United Nations.
