How to use transition to move your organziation to the next stage

It is now recognized that all nonprofits go through several stages of development: founding, growing, maturing and reinventing. An organization that is not evolving and is stuck in one of the stages of development is normally doomed to failure. Therefore, knowing what stage your organization is in and taking steps to move it to the next phase is crucial to keeping it on the road to success. This session will explore the following topics:
- Why organizations need to change in order to survive
- Warning signals that your organization is in need of change, and how to address these signals
- Managing power struggles and turf battles that inevitably result when an organization is in transition
- Ensuring that staff and other stakeholders support the transition fully
- How to measure whether the transition has been effective and if any further changes are needed

You will learn how to use various tools including organizational assessments, conflict resolution policies, implementation plans, and leadership plans to guide your organization through the transition. This session is intended for Board Members, Executives, Senior Staff and HR Managers.
Speakers for this session:

Claire Huschle
Executive Director
Arlington Arts Center

Claire Huschle became the Executive Director of the Arlington Arts Center in August of 2005, and has guided the organization from being a Board-run organization with an annual budget of under $250,000 to one run by a professional staff with a budget of $700,000. Since becoming Executive Director, Claire has worked with her trustees to transition the Board from a working one, back to its traditional role as a policy and development oriented body. She has also added staff as the Board relinquished duties. Claire received Masters in Art History from the University of Texas-Austin, and teaches at George Mason University`s Masters in Arts Management program. She is a member of Art Table.

Michelle Hynes
