Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it 
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Katie Cutler
Director of Development
Cure Alzheimer`s Fund

Katie has over 15 years experience working in corporate outreach, relationship building, and fundraising in a diverse range of sectors. Currently she is Director of Development at Cure Alzheimer`s Fund where she established the development program and worked with the Board of Directors to build a donor base. Prior to her current position, she was Director of Community Outreach and Special Initiatives for Isis Maternity, a community based organization focused on new parents and babies. While there, she established an outreach program to doctors and midwives that significantly increased the organization’s membership. She started her career in fundraising as an Assistant Director at Harvard Business School, where she was responsible for annual giving and major gifts. Katie is a graduate of Middlebury College and has an MBA degree from Babson College.

Clare McCully
Executive Director - New England Program Office
National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship

Clare has more than eighteen years of non-profit management, annual and capital campaign experience. She received a Cornerstone Award in 2005 from Women in Development of Greater Boston, and a recipient of an Award of Distinction from the Massachusetts Association of Fundraising Professionals. She is Executive Director of NFTE - NE, which teaches entrepreneurship to youth in low-income communities. Prior to NFTE, Clare was Executive Director of the Newton Schools Foundation. She created the Massachusetts Education Foundations Association, instrumental in assisting the formation of 15 new education foundations in Massachusetts, as well as in New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Florida and Illinois. She is a national speaker on education foundations, is Board President of the Wellesley College Shakespeare Society Alumnae Association, and Class of 1981 Annual Giving Co-Chair, Board Vice President of the Newton Symphony Orchestra, and Program Strategist of Women in Development of Greater Boston Board.

Brian Winslow
Director of Development
Community Health & Hospice

Brian Winslow brings over 10 years of development experience to Community Health & Hospice where he holds the position of Director of Development. Brian has previously held positions with the Maine Conservation Corps, the Marine Animal Lifeline, the Natural Resources Council of Maine and The Animal Welfare Society. He received a BS in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Iowa State University and a Masters in Public Policy and Management from the University of Southern Maine. Over the past ten years he has specialized in building and rejuvenating Development Programs, and has developed a number of techniques that engage and involve Board Members in the fundraising process. Brian is also a member of several professional organizations including the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the New England Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.
