Planned giving

Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Speakers for this session:

Kirby Gould
Vice President
Christian Church Foundation

Kirby Gould has been vice president of the North Central Zone of the Christian Church Foundation since 1997. The Foundation assists Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations in the areas of endowments, permanent funds, planned gifts, special gifts and bequests. She helps churches development policies related to the stewardship of accumulated resources, and works with individuals to achieve their personal charitable estate planning goals. Previously she was director of development for Oklahoma Christian Home for 13 years, a retirement community in Edmond, OK, where she oversaw all fundraising activities, including annual, capital, and planned giving. Kirby is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Mid-America Council on Planned Giving, where she serves on their board. She holds the designations of CFRE, ChFC and CASL, and is working on the CAP designation. She is a graduate of Phillips University with a degree in music therapy.

Dan Nicoson
Vice President for University Advancement
Missouri Western State University

Dan has worked in higher education development for 35 years. In addition to duties at Missouri Western, he serves as Adjunct Faculty at Indiana University where he teaches a planned giving course for The Fund Raising School. He has previously served as President of Vincennes University Foundation (14 years), Assistant to the President for Advancement at Marian College (5 years), and Development Representative and Director of Development at the University of Indianapolis (12 years). In all of these positions, planned giving was one of responsibilities. He has served as President of the Indiana Chapters of AFP and NCPG. His career has been entirely in "small shop" development programs and has worked with staffs/boards of various charitable organizations to provide introductory information and considerations related to planned giving. Dan is a CFRE and has a BS from University of Indianapolis and an MS from Indiana State.
