Capital campaigns
 

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

 

Speakers for this session:

Maryanne Dersch
strategist and superfan
501creative, inc.

In her current position, Maryanne works with local and national nonprofits on branding entire organizations, capital campaigns, and fund appeals. Maryanne has worked with capital campaign staff, consultants and steering committees to develop marketing plans, themes and brands using group facilitation techniques. She has worked with many area capital campaigns including The College School, KWMU, Temple Israel and the Jewish Community Center to create campaign materials that inform and engage potential donors. Previous to 501creative, Maryanne was a consultant for Vector communications where she developed communications plans, facilitated planning and focus group sessions, and managed special events. Maryanne currently serves on the board of the St. Louis chapter of Association of Fundraising professionals. She has a bachelor of journalism degree from Mizzou.

Chad Jolly
Vice President for Institutional Advancement
William Jewell College

Chad, a native of St. Louis, has spent the last fifteen years in enrollment and development work at William Jewell College in the Kansas City area. In 2003, Chad assumed the Vice President for Institutional Advancement position just a few months after a tornado did significant damage to the Jewell campus. Since that time, Jewell has completed $25 million in capital improvements and has invested heavily in its development operation. The College is moving into the largest campaign in its 160 year history and secured over $20 million in commitments last year. Chad was awarded a doctorate of philosophy in urban leadership and policy studies in education from the University of Missouri Kansas City in 2001 and a master of arts in higher education administration from Saint Louis University in 1997. In 1994, he earned bachelor of arts degree through William Jewell`s Oxbridge Program majoring in history.

Timothy Willard
Vice President for Development
Ranen Technical College

Dr. Tim Willard is responsible for managing a full-range, professional development office. Since June, 2001, Tim has hired individuals who have established programs in annual, capital, planned giving and alumni relations for the College. The College began the quiet phase of a $10 million capital campaign in October, 2002; in June, 2007 the campaign had reached a total of over $11 million. In addition to the capital campaign, funds totaling another $7 million have been raised. This 5-year total of over $18 million raised is a record for Ranken. In his career, Willard has been involved with the raising of more than $115 million. Dr. Willard has served in development roles at Regis College in Denver, University of San Diego, Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and Fontbonne University, St. Louis.
