Fundraising in the one-person development shop: making the most of a shoestring budget

At the best of times, fundraising can be challenging. However, fundraising in the one person development shop can be daunting, especially when one is working with a shoestring budget. The key in situations like these is to know what areas to prioritize, and how to get the biggest bang for your buck because you can't do it all.  This seminar will focus on the issues unique to one person fundraising departments, and will drill down in the following areas:
  • Keeping your organization on track financially: create and maintain a year-round fundraising plan
  • Research: research your prospects on a shoestring budget
  • Direct mail: work with an established third party service provider to maximize your returns
  • Major gifts program: develop and maintain a manageable high dollar giving club
  • Planned giving: start simple with a wills and bequests program
  • Donor solicitation: make it easy for your donors to give and for you to receive donations
  • Special events: conduct a unique annual event that makes efficient use of volunteers
  • Leadership involvement: find creative ways to get your executive director and/or board involved in the fundraising process
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to take their one person development shop to the next level.
Speakers for this session:

The Apple of His Eye Mission Society

Mr. Cohen has served as a missionary since 1976. His 33 years of service included the formation of three new ministries. In Canada he began a new agency and took it from scratch to an operating budget of $500,000 on a shoestring. Then in 1996 he came to St. Louis as founder of the Apple of His Eye Mission Society taking it from ground zero to an agency with over 45,000 active individuals and congregations. He is the past 1st Vice president of The Association of Lutheran Mission Agencies, has a BA in Sociology from the University of Washington and a MA in Missiology from Fuller School of World Missions. He has served at the Field Counselor for Jewish Missions for The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. He works on a shoe string through volunteers who share a passion for what is being done.

Stone Soup Ministries

Terri Reed is the founder and Exec. Director of Stone Soup Ministries, a volunteer organization dedicated to the elimination of poverty. Terri is a Drury University graduate with over 20yrs of experience in the business and non-profit sectors, and an expert networker. Through active participation in the local community and as Regional Coordinator for Gather the Women International, she has accumulated a large variety of free resources that are now made available on all 7 continents. Her collaborative efforts since 2005 have resulted in over 400 case managers being trained, the establishment of local Task Forces to deal with poverty-related issues, and a series of classes to promote self-sufficiency for low-income individuals. Using free resources and in-kind donations, Terri has used a "win-win" fundraising philosophy to offer all of this on a zero operating budget and can demonstrate how to find community partners for almost any endeavor.
