Winning proposals: a tour of three successful case studies
 

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out above the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winners so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:

The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favorable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the comfort they need that you will be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way that the funder can immediately understand them
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls that bedevil this section of the proposal
  • Sources of support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don't have them?
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.
Speakers for this session:

James Bafaro
Senior Manager, Global Corporate Citizenship
Boeing St. Louis

Jim Bafaro is Senior Manager, Global Corporate Citizenship for Boeing St. Louis. He manages a five-person office that oversees the annual distribution of $3 million in charitable grants and $2.5 million in grants distributed by the Boeing St. Louis Employees Community Fund. His office manages the placement of Boeing executives on non-profit boards of directors, oversees distribution of in-kind donations to non-profits, and coordinates the activities of Boeing volunteers. Jim also surpervises employees with similar duties in Wichita, Houston, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. Prior to assuming his current position in 2006, Jim was a Communications Manager at Boeing, public relations director for the YWCA of Metro St. Louis, and held numerous management and other positions in radio news broadcasting, including Show Editor for National Public Radio`s Morning Edition program in Washington, DC. Jim is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Jean Deasy
Volunteer
Miriam School and Miriam Foundation

Jean Deasy has a long history of fund raising, beginning as a college student at the University of Kentucky. Within this position, Jean was responsible for increasing parish funds through direct solicitations. In the mid 1990`s Jean was a fundraiser for the capital campaign and renovation of the Cathedral in Louisville KY. In 2003 Jean raised money for the First Autism Walk in St Louis. In 2006 Jean aided the Miriam Foundation in securing grant dollars from the Washington University Business School Social Entrepreneur Competition. This competition included written and oral elements to the proposal which were evaluated on sixteen point scales.

Stephanie DeChambeau
Director of Institutional Giving
Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra

Stephanie DeChambeau has been the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s (SLSO) Director of Institutional Giving since May 2000. She is responsible for all corporate, foundation and government philanthropic support, representing 20% of annual contributed revenue. She is part of a fundraising team which, during that time, has raised more than $200 million in operating, endowment, capital, and stopgap funding. Stephanie works with every organizational department and constituency to identify prospective institutional funders and match them with SLSO projects. She writes all grant proposals and reports and manages individualized cultivation and stewardship processes. Prior to working at the SLSO, Stephanie held development positions at St. Thomas Hospital Foundation, Nashville Symphony, and Vanderbilt University Law School. Her experience includes database and office management, and overseeing telefunding and direct mail campaigns. She currently serves as an application review panelist for the Regional Arts Commission. Stephanie graduated summa cum laude from Hope College (Holland, Michigan).

Carol Moreland
President
InterAction, Inc.

Carol is President of InterAction, Inc., a training and consulting firm that improves human performance through effective communication. She works with a broad spectrum of non-profit organizations. For the past 14 years, Carol has delivered the Relationship Building Workshop for major and planned giving officers, helping them use a donor-focused system to to cultivate long-term relationships. In addition, she has been a coach to executive directors, board members, volunteers, and development officers as they prepare and deliver persuasive appeals to foundations, corporations and individual funders. Carol holds an M.A.from Purdue University in Organizational Communication, and a B.S. from Southern Illinois University. She is a member of American Society of Training and Development, and frequently speaks at association meetings. She serves on a United Way of Greater St. Louis Allocation Committee, and is an active volunteer and fund raiser for Eliot Unitarian Chapel.
