As the grant seeking process becomes more and more competitive, it is  essential to understand what corporate grantmakers are actually looking for when they decide whether or not to fund a nonprofit organization. This session offers an unusual opportunity to hear directly from a variety of corporate foundation and corporate giving funders. Grantmakers will participate in a panel discussion. Issues we will explore with the panelists include:
  • Corporate partnerships: why are corporations looking to partner with nonprofits?
  • Getting your foot in the door: how to start a relationship with a corporation when you don't have a relationship 
  • Building an ongoing relationship with a corporation: how to keep the dollars flowing beyond the first check
Whether you have been securing grants for decades or are just starting out, the panel discussion will provide you with a valuable view of the grantmaking world from the point of view of the grantmaker.

Suzanne Canino
Director/ Corporate Marketing
The Seattle Times

Suzanne has been involved in grantmaking for 15 years. As the Director of Corporate Marketing she is responsible for execution of The Seattle Times brand and marketing strategy. As one element of that strategy, she leads the Seattle Times Corporate Giving Program. Over the years The Times has distributed grants ranging from $100 - $250,000 through their giving program. Suzanne also runs The Seattle Times Fund For The Needy program; raising more than $13 million for 13 agencies over 31 years. Previously, as Strategic Business Development Manger, Suzanne was responsible for circulation marketing and customer retention for The Seattle Times. Before coming to The Times, she worked as a Development Professional at United Way of King County. Primary focus was on cultivating and maintaining philanthropic relationships with corporate and community volunteers. Suzanne currently serves as a member of the Marketing Committee for Leadership Tomorrow, Sister Schools, a non-profit organization focused on delivering school supplies to children in Uganda, and United Way of King County. She earned her BS in Marketing from University of Oregon, is a member of Philanthropy Northwest, Puget Sound Chamber of AMA and INMA, International Newsmedia Marketing Association.
