Capital campaigns
 

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

 

Speakers for this session:

Edward Mc Dunn
Executive Director
Pearl buck Center Inc.

Edward has 34 years experience in nonprofit Management and Higher Education. He began his Fundraising career with the United Way in Tucson AZ. Since then, he served as Executive Director in Spokane, and the Tri-Cities, served six years as Senior Vice-President of the United Way of America and ten years as President-CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas-Texas. During his twenty-six year United Way career, he has raised over a half billion dollars. In 2005, he accepted the position of Executive Director of Pearl Buck Center in Eugene, where he conducted a $6,500,000 Capital Campaign for the opening of a new 50,000 square foot facility housing all four of the Pearl Buck Centers programs. Edward has a Bachelor`s degree from Bemidji State University, a Master`s from the University of Northern Colorado and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Michelle Meador
AVP/Nonprofit Services Specialist

Michelle Meador has over 10 years experience working directly with nonprofit organizations. In her current position, she works primarily with local nonprofit organizations to better understand their finances, manage cash-flow, donor stewardship and coordinating their banking needs. She works with nonprofits as they move through the Capital Campaign and fundraising cycles; specifically with plan development and Cash Flow Management. She also faciliatates a quarterly networking group of 35 Executive Directors in the Eugene area. Prior to Pacific Continental Bank, Michelle was the Development Director at the Relief Nursery in Eugene, Oregon. Michelle recieved her Masters in Public Administration through the Planning, Public Policy and Management Department at the University of Oregon.

Gail Yates
Senior Development Officer
Seattle University

Gail is an experienced not-for-profit CEO leader and fundraiser in both the public and private sector. She led the creation of Junior Achievement in Arizona where she initiated their first capital campaign to begin a new program, Exchange City. In her current position, Gail was involved in the recent $168 million dollar capital campaign at Seattle University. Gail exceeded her original $ 5 million goal by raising nearly $12 million. She was active in all phases of the Campaign which concluded in June, 2009. Gail earned a BA in English from Georgia State University. She has a Certificate in International Marketing from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, and is a member of CASE and AACSB.
