Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Fred Matthews
Principal
Sound Advancement Strategies

Fred has been involved in development for 39 years. In his current position, he provides services to nonprofit organizations in major and planned gift fundraising, a field in which he has focused for the past 15 years. Previously, as Senior Philanthropic Advisor at Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, Fred was responsible for cultivating, closing and stewarding individual gifts of $5,000 and greater and for all activities of the planned giving program. Before that, he worked as Principal at Matthews Philanthropic Services where he was responsible for providing a wide variety of consulting services related to major and planned gifts. He earned B.A. in English Literature from Whitman College and a M.Div. in Religion and Psychology from the Pacific School of Religion. He is a member of Washington Planned Giving Council and a founding member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Washington State Chapter, and the Northwest Development Officers Association. Fred has chaired and helped present a variety of conferences and educational programs for both fundraising professionals and volunteers. In addition to presenting workshops and seminars, Fred is the author of more than 30 articles and reviews in a variety of professional publications.

Sue Mecham
Development Director
Fulcrum Foundation

Sue has been involved in development for 11 years. In her current position, she is responsible for fund development at the Fulcrum Foundation, founded in 2002 to support Catholic schools and students in western Washington. Fulcrum successfully completed its first capital campaign in 2008, having raised $43 million for endowments and immediate needs. Sue guides all of Fulcrum's fundraising, including the fall drive, gala fundraiser, major gifts and legacy giving programs. Previously, as Director of Gift Planning at Seattle Preparatory School, Sue created its first recognition society for planned gifts and also supported the capital campaign, annual major gifts drive and fundraising events.Sue is an Emeritus Trustee of Seattle Children's Hospital Guild Association Board, and is a past president of Children's Frances W. Nordstrom Guild. She earned a Masters in Nonprofit Leadership from Seattle University and a Bachelor of Arts in Business/Marketing from Washington State University. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Northwest Development Officers Association, Washington Planned Giving Council, and Partnership for Philanthropic Planning. Sue has presented at National Catholic Educational Association conferences at Boston College, Anaheim CA, and Minneapolis MN.

Marlon Sandlin
Director of Development - Gift Planning
Seattle Pacific University

Marlon has been involved in fundraising for 31 years. In his current position at Seattle Pacific University, he is responsible for working with individuals to secure all forms of planned gifts, including gifts to endowment. He also provides leadership to marketing efforts and assistance to major gift officers. Previously, as National Director of Gift Planning at World Vision, Marlon was responsible for managing a large gift planning team, including regional gift planning officers. This included marketing, working with allied professionals and supporting regional major gift officers. Before that, he worked as Vice President at the MAF Foundation where he was responsible for securing planned gifts in support of Mission Aviation Fellowship. Marlon currently serves as a volunteer performer for the Jazz Disciples - a big band that performs benefit concerts in support of women's shelters, adoption agencies, senior services and other worthy causes. He earned an M.Div. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of Washington Planned Giving Council (former President and Board Member), the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, and the Estate Planning Council of Seattle. He is also licensed as a Certified Financial Planner.
