Planned giving

Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Tim Friedrichsen
Attorney
Amicus Law Group, PC

Tim Friedrichsen is the founding shareholder of Amicus Law Group PC, located in downtown Seattle. Tim advises business owners and high net worth families, emphasizing business formations and transactions, real estate, tax and estate planning. Tim also represents tax-exempt organizations, private and public charitable foundations, and charitably-inclined individuals in connection with estate planning and planned charitable giving. Tim has been in private practice since 1985, starting as a tax advisor at the public accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche. He opened his own practice in 1994 and founded Amicus Law Group in 2001. Tim has served as President of the Board of Trustees for Childhaven, a Seattle-based organization dedicated to the protection of children who are the victims of child abuse and neglect, and is a member of the Washington Planned Giving Council and the WSU Foundation planned giving advisory board.

Frank Minton
President
Planned Giving Services

Frank Minton has 31 years experience in the field of planned giving. He served as senior estate planning officer and field director at Northwestern University, then as director of planned giving and executive director of development at the University of Washington. In 1991, he founded Planned Giving Services, a consulting company that serves all types of charities throughout the United States and Canada. He has served as president of the National Committee on Planned Giving and chair of the American Council on Gift Annuities, and he has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Award of the National Committee on Planned giving, the Outstanding Development Officer of the Northwest Development Officers Association, and the Friend of Canadian Philanthropy. He is a frequest speaker, is the principal author of Charitable Gift Annuities: the Complete Resource Manual, a co-author of Planned Giving for Canadians, and has published numerous articles.
