Winning proposals: a tour of four successful case studies

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out above the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winners so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:

The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favorable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the comfort they need that you will be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way that the funder can immediately understand them
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls that bedevil this section of the proposal
  • Sources of support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don't have them?
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.
Speakers for this session:

Joyce Agee
Ass. Director of Development
University of Washington Libraries

Joyce Agee has lived and worked in England, Australia and the United States. During her career, she has developed private and government proposals to secure funding for visual arts and museum exhibits and special projects. While living in England, she helped to secure funding for a major visual arts exhibition called Women`s Images of Men. She located 100% of the funding for the first national touring exhibiton and a catalogue for Arts Project Australia, an organizatin dedicated to artists with intellectual disabilities. She secured 100% funding for permanent museum and touring exhibits at the Benga Oral History Center and Museum in Melbourne, Australia. As Associate Director of Development for the UW LIbraries, she researches and writes private grants, manages the Friends of the Libraries Board and obtains major gifts. She has obtained the most private grants in the history of the libraries.

Dave Brown
Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations
Western Washington Relations

Dave has worked in development for over 19 years in higher education and health & human services, successfully writing proposals for capital campaigns, programs and operations from private, state and federal funders. Formerly a grant writer at South Puget Sound CC in Olympia, he worked as a writer and development director for the Boys & Girls Club’s of both King and Snohomish counties before taking his current position at Western Washington University where oversees the corporate and foundation efforts for 7 colleges and 2 departments, working with faculty, deans and other staff to develop proposals, facilitate site visits and manage donor relations. He is a graduate of the Masters in Student Personnel Administration program at Western and was on the staff at the UK’s first alumni relations office at Strathclyde University.
