How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers

The relationship between grantmaker and grant seeker seems at first blush to contain a major power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. However, according to recent reports, grantmakers are coming to realize that the interests of both sides are met when  the playing field is more level. 

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grantmaker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face to face meetings: when should your pursue them and what should they be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the program officer to look at a more unconventional program
  • The program officer as advocate: how to convert a program officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When "no" means "not yet": turning a rebuff or a declination into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant seekers who understand the importance of relationship building with grantmakers, but have not yet figured out how to do it successfully.
Speakers for this session:

Lyle Hildahl
Director of Education
Washington Restaurant Association Education Foundation

Lyle is currently the Director of Education for the Washington Restaurant Association and writes grants for the Education Foundation. This includes networking with the State Health Department, State Liquor Board, Labor and Industries, OSPI, and the Workforce Training and Education Board. Prior to joining the Washington Restaurant Association, he served as Director of Culinary Arts with Skagit Valley college for 24 years. He is chairman of the board for the American Culinary Federation Accrediting Commission, and served as past president on the Council for Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Educators. He has a bachelors degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from Washington State University and holds various industry certifications.

Carol has over 15 years experience as a fundraiser; 10 of them with annual giving and 5 years as a grant manager/writer. She has strategically managed successful workplace campaigns while working for United Way; (driving success as Microsoft doubled its workplace giving and strategically focusing the City of Seattle`s Combined Charities and the result was a 175% increase in dollars and 300% increase in particpation. She has had unprecedented success in increasing participation in workplaces with on-line campaigns. Her creative approach to fundraising is a best practice. She is a member of AFP and NDOA and a tenured member of the Riverview School Board. Her passions are fundraising, education and strengthening community! Carol is high energy, dynamic and a passionate speaker.
