Finding Funders: the art of successful research

According to a recent survey of grantmakers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals that they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognized that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organization will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grantmakers in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grantmakers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation's priorities are compatible with your mission
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate  funding.

Jessica Balsam
Prospect Manager
The Evergreen State College

Jessica is the one-person prospect research and prospect management shop for The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wa. As the Prospect Manager, she plays an integral role in the major gifts team by identifying new prospects, performing research on existing prospects, and tracking the process in the foundation’s database. Prior to joining Evergreen, Jessica was the Manager of Development Services at Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma, Wa, where she undertook a major database overhaul to improve the museum’s ability to track donor giving, interests, and movement through the prospect pipeline. She sits on the board of directors of an arts-related non-profit in Tacoma, as well as the Northwest chapter of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement, and is an independent database consultant.

Laura has secured millions of dollars in grant funding, including over $2,000,000 in corporate, foundation and federal grant dollars in the last 12 months alone. As the lead grant writer for Seattle Pacific University, Laura oversees grant applications, evaluates programs considering applying for funding, and writes letters of interest and grant proposal applications. At Seattle Pacific, Laura also consults with internal clients as they move through the fund application process - from researching potential funders, to writing the application, to creating detailed and comprehensive evaluation plans. Laura earned a BA degree in Philosophy and Law from Washington State University, attended UNI for a MA, and holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) with a Public Policy focus. Prior to joining

John Schultz has written over 300 grant proposals, winning over $5 million for clients in education and the sciences. In 2000, after several years as a technical writer for high-tech businesses, Schultz took a position as a grant writer at the Museum of Flight writing proposals to support the Museum’s projects and operations. Over the years, he has come to know many of the corporate and foundation grantmakers in the region. His blog (grant-writing-grant-winning.blogspot.com) has been running for three years, reporting on trends in philanthropy and carrying on a “personal dialog with the profession.” In 2006 he incorporated as John F.
