One of the best ways to educate the public about your nonprofit, recruit volunteers and solicit donors face-to-face is to hold a special event. This event could be related to the mission of your organization, or just an event like a blood drive, art showing or a concert that you organize.
Topics we will cover include:
  •  Is a special event right for your organization? A look at the pros and cons of planning award receptions, sports tournaments, auctions, and other fund-raising events
  •  How much money should your event make? Revenue considerations for a nonprofit event
  •  Should you underwrite the event? Understanding the strings attached to corporate sponsorship
  •  How should you market your event? Segmenting and positioning yourself for your target market
Attendees will walk out with key insights on whether a special event is feasible, and how to make it a roaring success.  This session is intended for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Y`Anad Burrell, MPA/MHA
Fund Development & Communications Consultant

Y`Anad has been working in the non-profit and event planning arenas for over 7 years. In addition to designing fundraising campaigns for non-profits, she is responsible for handling all aspects of event planning including negotiating venue space, catering, signage, set design, programs and much more. She has also been responsible for pitching sponsorship and creating the pitch collateral while managing events with attendees from 350 - 1000, and generating revenue that ranged from $25K to $500K. She earned a BA in Accounting from SFSU, an MPA and MHA both from Golden Gate University, and a Certificate in Fundraising from the Fundraising School in Indiana, Indianapolis. She is a member of AFP and AGP.

Susan Willson (M.A., B.A.) has over ten years of experience in special event planning, including small and large scale fundraising benefits. From food and wine tasting events, awards presentation dinners/luncheons, fun-runs, book sales, community festivals, telethons, silent and live auctions, grand prize giveaways, ribbon cutting ceremonies and ground breaking celebrations, Susan has done it all. In her current position, Susan oversees the development and fundraising programs for her organization. Her responsibilities include strategic planning and program implementation, propsosal writing, special events, donor cultivation and stewardship, and marketing/outreach efforts. Prior to joining the Placer SPCA, Susan worked as a Special Events Coordinator for another animal welfare organization for a couple of years and volunteered her time for numerous non-profit organizations providing special event planning/coordination/consultation and media/ marketing efforts.
