Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it 
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.

Anna Alioto
Development Director
Hidden Villa

Anna has been involved with non-profits for over seven years. Currently, she is the Development Director at Hidden Villa, an environmental education facility in the Los Altos Hills with an annual budget of 2.8 million. In addition to working as a nonprofit staff member, Anna has served on three boards of directors and worked as a consultant to non-profits who wish to engage their boards in fundraising. She also leads the Los Altos Town Crier Holiday Fund Development Directors group that meets bi-monthly.

Katherine Bella
Principal
The Bella Group

Ms. Bella has worked with nonprofit boards for more than 25 years, providing them with training and coaching to increase their fundraising skills and, in the process, build the fundraising capacity of the organizations that they represent. She works with boards to strengthen their abilities to serve as ambassadors in the community, and to cultivate and solicit annual, capital, endowment and planned gifts. Her clients include San Francisco Bay Area nonprofits working in the areas of arts and culture, education, health, human service, advocacy and civic affairs, religion, and venture philanthropy. Ms. Bella focuses on the unique strengths and qualities of each organization and volunteer in order to build the strongest and most vibrant development program possible.

Kalah Bumba

Kalah Bumba is currently consulting with life planning specialists and nonprofit organizations for peace in the community. She is the retired Director of the Monterey County Area Agency on Aging, which administers $2 million for services for seniors and was seen as the leading advocate for seniors. Ms. Bumba staffed an advisory council and reported to the board of supervisors. She has served on numerous boards, including four years on League of Women Voters of California (currently Chair), American Cancer Society`s Cancer Action Network for state of California, California Association of Area Agencies on Aging (elected officer), Childbirth Education League of Salinas, California (founder), and local school board (elected). She was also appointed by governors to the Board of Medical Quality (twice) and by the senate to the Ombudsman Foundation. Kalah Bumba has a Masters of Science degree in Community Health Planning and Administration from University of Cincinnati.
