Strategic alliances and partnerships provide many benefits to nonprofits. By combining forces and eliminating duplication of mission and services, nonprofit organizations can often increase their social impact.  Funders often also look to see if organizations are teaming up instead of competing with each other. However, many nonprofit organizations find themselves uncertain not only of exactly what a partnership will entail for their organization, but how to go about building the partnership in a way that best serves their needs.

This Session will explore:
-How to know if a Strategic Alliance will benefit your organization
-The different kinds of alliances and partnerships and how nonprofits can benefit from them
- A step by step guide to setting up a partnership
-Identifying suitable partners
- Common mistakes to avoid with your strategic partner
- How to evaluate whether your alliance is producing a return on investment

You will leave this session with a full understanding of how and why a strategic alliance can benefit your organization, and the best ways to set one up.
 
This session is intended for Board Members, Executive Level Staff and Senior Development and Corporate Relations Staff. 
Speakers for this session:

Jonathan Bernstein
Director
Anti-Defamation League

Jonathan has been a nonprofit leader and fundraiser for over twenty years. In his current position, he is responsible for fostering positive relationships with key stake-holders who help him mediate discrimination cases and coordinate cultural sensitivity seminars. Previously, as Regional Director at the Anti-Defamation League in Houston, Jonathan was responsible for developing alliances with clergy and business leaders to form an anti-hate coalition and pass State civil rights legislation. Before that, as Regional Director at the Anti-Defamation League in Orange County, he worked with government officials and federal prosecutors to help them convict members of a California hate group. Jonathan is often called upon for commentary to the media on a variety of civil rights issues. He earned an MBA in Marketing from the University of Texas, an MA in Communications from University of Texas and his BA in English and Political Science from U.C. Berkeley.

Mary Hiland
President
Hiland & Associates

Mary has been involved in nonprofits for 35 years. She is now a consultant with expertise in strategic alliances and leadership development. In the period of eight years she helped over 30 nonprofits explore, negotiate, and implement strategic alliances. She has specialized training in and has conducted workshops on nonprofit strategic alliances for many organizations. Previously, as CEO at Momentum, she led two separate mergers culminating in the formation of one organization from four. She was selected as CEO of this new entity, a nonprofit with over 500 staff and a budget of $25 million. She earned Ph.D. in organizational systems from Fielding University, and a MPA in Public Administration from San Jose State. She is a member of Alliance for Nonprofit Management, Rotary, and NAWBO. She has two more Masters Degrees in organizational development and social work. She has received numerous honors including Tribute to Women in Industry and the Silicon Valley Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership Award.

Irene van der Zande
Executive Director/Co-Founder

Since 1989, Irene has been leading her organization and guiding the staff and centers in building strategic alliances to help support their mission. With a very small staff she uses strategic alliances to forge relationships with schools, organizations, and supporters. Before Kidpower, Irene consulted with a large range of nonprofits helping them to form strategic alliances with key partners. Irene has been a VISTA Volunteer, and was once the Director of the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County. She earned her BA in psychology from UCLA in 1969.
