Making the most of your volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of many nonprofits, yet many organizations find managing volunteers to be one of the most challenging aspects of nonprofit life. The key to a successful volunteer management program is the way that you execute the three R’s – recruiting, retaining and recognizing volunteers.

This session will explore some examples of successful volunteer programs, and address the following topics:
-    Why people volunteer
-    New ways to recruit, manage and place high quality volunteers
-    Revitalizing a volunteer program that has become stale
-    Ensuring collaboration between volunteers and staff
-    Effective ways to recognize your volunteers

If you are looking to initiate a new volunteer program, or enhance the success of an existing one this session is not to be missed. It is intended for board members, executive directors, senior staff and development staff.
Speakers for this session:

Julie Mason
Service Network Manager
Monument Community Partnership

Julie has 20 years experience working side by side with volunteers. From first contact to last recognition Julie knows the processes that work and create volunteer success in a wide variety of settings. Whether one volunteer or a team of hundreds, she knows how to motivate, manage, and keep volunteers coming back for more. As Volunteer Committee Chair at Project Homeless Connect she managed over 900 volunteers for events in Contra Costa County, creating the processes required to find, motivate and mobilize volunteers to work at these one-stop events. Before that, as the Volunteer Coordinator at Contra Costa Interfaith Housing she worked with 23 faith communities to support, donate, and volunteer at a permanent supportive housing site. Julie also created and directs Biddy Sports, a non-competitive youth sports program for preschoolers, coached completely by volunteers. Biddy Sports has 12 years experience recruiting, training and managing volunteer coaches serving over 5,500 families. She earned her BA in Sociology from University of Wisconsin.
