A well functioning board of directors is essential for a nonprofit’s success, and without it, your organization will have limited ability to accomplish its mission. This session will examine some examples of highly functioning boards, and distill the keys to their success. The session will also explore the following topics: 
-  The core responsibilities of a nonprofit board
-  Structuring your board for maximum effectiveness (size, diversity, skills, etc.)
-  Proven techniques and approaches for board assessment and recruitment
-  Getting your board back on track when it  appears to have lost its way
-  Ways to make the most of the board-executive relationship

You will walk away from this session with fresh ideas on how to optimize your board`s performance.

This session is intended for board members and executive level staff who work closely with their boards.
Speakers for this session:

Adrienne Corbett
Executive Director
The Homeless Families Foundation

Adrienne has served in nonprofit executive positions for 35 years. In her current position, she is responsible for developing, executing and leading the overall strategic plan for the Homeless Families Foundation. She leads the executive team and supports initiatives that enhance advocacy for homeless families. Her responsibilities include promoting a global scope of thinking. She is the catalyst in working with the board in determining and facilitating the strategy and direction. She manages and facilitates board relations including partnering with the board to develop and refine strategic direction, as well as participating and facilitating committee and trustee meetings. As Executive Director at Elderchoices of Central Ohio, she was the primary contact for Board. During 25-year tenure, the Board grew from an Advisory Committee to a fully operational, effective Board of Trustees. She earned Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Miami University. She is a member of Human Services Association; Franklinto Civic Association.

Julie Houpt
VIce President for Institutional Advancement
Denison University

Julie has been involved in development for 20 years. In her current position, she leads the 42-member Advancement team at Denison and has oversight responsibility for all development, alumni relations and communications activities. She works closely with the President, Provost and other Vice Presidents and Trustees, serves as the Secretary to the Board of Trustees, and is an ad hoc member of the Trustee Affairs Committee. Previously, as Director of Development at Friends' Central School in suburban Philadelphia, Julie was responsible for assisting in recruiting and staffing members of the Board of Trustees, working with the Head of school to develop Board meeting agendas and participating in Board meetings. Before that, she worked as Director of Major Gifts at the University of Pennsylvania. Julie currently serves as a member of the CASE Philanthropy Commission and is a Regular CASE presenter including serving as faculty at the Winter Institute for Chief Development Officers and at CASE V. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Denison University and a Juris Doctor in Law from University of Southern California. She is a member of CASE and serves on the Board of Trustees of Kendal at Granville.

Jason Shanks
Consultant
Jason Shanks Consulting

Jason has been involved in board management for four years. He has recently started nonprofit consulting in the areas of board development and strategic planning. Currently, he offers a Board 101 series for inexperienced board of directors as well as a board strategic planning retreat. Previously, as President at Greater Columbus Right to Life, Jason was responsible for board development, strategic planning, fundraising, development, volunteer coordination, etc. Before that, he worked as Founder and Treasurer at Catholic Youth Summer Camp and now serves as the Chairman of the Board. Jason also sits on the board of One More Soul, Inc. in Dayton, Ohio. Jason currently serves as Administrator for St. Mary's German Village. He earned Masters in Nonprofit Administration from University of Notre Dame. In his coursework at Notre Dame, he studied under Roxanne Spillett, President and CEO of Boys and Girls of America, on Board Management and Development.
