One of the best ways to educate the public about your nonprofit, recruit volunteers and solicit donors face-to-face is to hold a special event. This event could be related to the mission of your organization, or just an event like a blood drive, art showing or a concert that you organize.
Topics we will cover include:
  •  Is a special event right for your organization? A look at the pros and cons of planning award receptions, sports tournaments, auctions, and other fund-raising events
  •  How much money should your event make? Revenue considerations for a nonprofit event
  •  Should you underwrite the event? Understanding the strings attached to corporate sponsorship
  •  How should you market your event? Segmenting and positioning yourself for your target market
Attendees will walk out with key insights on whether a special event is feasible, and how to make it a roaring success.  This session is intended for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Yolanda F. Johnson
Development Manager
Princess Grace Foundation-USA

Yolanda F. Johnson completed her Master`s Degree in Arts Management, with a special events concentration from the University of Akron. She served as the Acting Director of the Barthelmes Music Conservatory in Tulsa, Oklahoma before working as a special events consultant in the NYC area and leading the Special Events and Individual Giving department at the Hudson River Museum in Westchester. She is currently the Development Manager at the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, where she oversees the entire fundraising program, which is majority special event-related and includes events nationwide. Yolanda is the author of "A Useful Guide to Planning Special Events for Arts Organizations", which began as her gradute thesis and which she is in the process of updating and publishing. Yolanda is a member of the New York City chapter of AFP and a member of the Special Projects Committee of Women in Development.

Tammy Severino
Director of Development & Public Relations
Eden II Programs

Ms. Severino is Director of Development & Public Relations for Eden II Programs, serving persons with autism on LI and the five boroughs. She is responsible for designing and executing a development plan and launching dual capital campaigns to provide new facilities for the consumers served. In addition to more than 15 years in development, Ms. Severino spent five years consulting in event planning and marketing. She has given classes on event planning/marketing, working with volunteers, and marketing/customer service for retail operations. Ms. Severino is Secretary of the Association of Fundraising Professional, LI Chapter Board. She has served as VP - Finance, Treasurer and Philanthropy Day Chair. She is a volunteer for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, creating a troop for daughters of working mothers. She is a member of several professional/civic groups.

Jeremy Shatan
Special Events Director
Hope & Heroes Children`s Cancer Fund

Jeremy started his non-profit career at Children`s Brain Tumor Foundation in 2001. While there he ran several fundraising events and coordinated public relations and marketing efforts for the charity. Since 2005, he has been Special Events Director at Hope & Heroes Children`s Cancer Fund, which supports pediatric oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. The vast majority of unrestricted funds at Hope & Heroes comes from events managed by Jeremy. The primary event is a golf tournament, which grossed over $800,000 in 2008 when the charity hosted over 300 players at Winged Foot Golf Club. Jeremy also supervises the annual dinner and helps community groups and families hold their own fundraisers to support Hope & Heroes. With creativity, professionalism, and a strong focus on the donor experience at events, Jeremy is committed to raising the level of success of each fundraisers he works on.
