According to a recent survey of grantmakers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals that they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognized that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organization will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grantmakers in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grantmakers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation's priorities are compatible with your mission
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate  funding.
Speakers for this session:

Steven Montgomery
Development Consultant

Steven is a development consultant who assists New York City nonprofits in securing funding, in the areas of the arts, workforce training and social services. His clients have included Rosie’s Broadway Kids (founded by Rosie O’Donnell), and the Henry Street Settlement. During the past year, he assisted one client in raising more than $700,000 in foundation and government grant funds. Previously, he was the Manager of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Development at the New York Philharmonic. During his first full year, the Philharmonic experienced a 21% increase in foundation support, a 28% increase in corporate support, and a 9% increase in government support. Montgomery is also an award-winning documentary filmmaker. He holds a BFA from New York University, and serves as vice president of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar.

Deborah Steinglass
Director of Development
National Executive Service Corps

Deborah Steinglass is Director of Development at the National Executive Service Corps (NESC) and has been a consultant to arts organizations throughout her career. She has 22 years of experience as an arts administrator and development professional. She was a Program Director and then became the first Director of Development for the American Music Center, where she quadrupled dollars raised from foundation support. Following that, she was Director of Development at Concert Artists Guild, where she secured major first time grants from foundations and government sources. In 1996, she began consulting to music organizations, including five years with the acclaimed national radio project From the Top. Recent clients include The Jazz Gallery, Electronic Music Foundation, Composers Collaborative, Concert Artists Guild and The Koussevitzky Music Foundation. She currently enjoys helping the NESC grow their development program. Deborah majored in piano performance at SUNY Albany and taught music for many years.
