Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:
  •  The essential components of a grant proposal package
  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool
You'll go back to the office with a well honed plan for ensuring that your proposals cover the right bases every time.


Speakers for this session:

Catherine Abrams
Fundraising and Development Consultant

Catherine Abrams has more than 16 years experience in fundraising and development in NYC. She raises funds for projects in education, arts & culture and human services organizations, including museums, historic sites, non profits for youth and families as well as the homeless. Ms. Abrams writes and obtains grants routinely for Federal, State, City, Foundation and Corporation funding sources. She is a NYU alumna with both a M.A. in Education and a Certificate in Fundraising. Her current employer is Praxis Housing Initiatives.

Gail Koelln
President
GK Grant Writing

Gail Koelln is President of GK Grant Writing, a grant writing consulting firm established in 2006. As the former Development Director at Queens Theatre in the Park from 1999 to 2006, Gail has many years of experience researching sources of funding and preparing proposals and reports for foundations, corporations and government agencies. She also worked as the Grants Specialist for Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, where she provided technical assistance regarding fundraising to nonprofit organizations in Queens and processed grant awards from the Borough President for nonprofits. Gail has a Master’s degree in Zoology, a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a passion for environmental causes. She is currently the Chair of Gotham Green, a business and social networking group for green businesses in New York, a former Chair of the New York City Sierra Club’s Endangered Species Committee and a former docent for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo.

Linda Wagner
Associate Executive Director
Institute for Music & Neurologic Function

In her current position, Linda oversees operational management, strategic planning, and fundraising—including grant-writing, corporate gifts, and special events. Linda has also served as the senior director of communications for Consumer Reports and Consumers Union, the national nonprofit consumer organization, where her responsibilities included collaboration with the development office. Her earlier career in public radio included promotion and development activities such as grant writing, corporate underwriting sales and on-air fundraising. A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, Linda will be awarded a master`s degree in public policy and public administration (MPA) from Columbia University in May 2008.
