Finding Funders: the art of successful research

According to a recent survey of grantmakers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals that they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognized that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organization will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grantmakers in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grantmakers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation's priorities are compatible with your mission
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate  funding.

Jeffrey Gilbert

Since his arrival at the ASPCA in 2006, Jeffrey Gilbert has led the effort to establish a modernized major gifts initiative at America`s premiere animal welfare organization. Jeff`s prior experience in annual giving, along with expertise in database analysis and prospect research, has enabled him to develop multiple portfolios of high net-worth individuals and foundations for personalized cultivation. Jeff has also served as a development associate at NYU, where he managed an increased the NYU Libraries` Annual Fund over 50% from 2003 to 2007. Jeff holds degrees in Philosophy and Intellectual History from Florida State University.

Waddy Thompson

Waddy Thompson is the author of "The Complete Idiot`s Guide to Grant Writing" (Alpha Books, 2nd ed., 2007) and a fundraiser with more than 25 years experience with NYC cultural institutions, including Symphony Space (current), New York Foundation for the Arts, Opera America, Second Stage Theatre, Poets & Writers, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He frequently leads workshops on all aspects of grant writing and has been a guest speaker for graduate programs at Columbia University and New York University. He serves on the board of Governance Matters, a nonprofit dedicated to improving nonprofit governance.

Sandra Toussaint-Burgher

Sandra Toussaint-Burgher has been with Special Olympics New York for two years and manages major gifts, foundation and government relations, annual gala and workplace/United Way campaigns. Since being at Special Olympics, Sandra has secured first-time foundation grants, increased the annual gala’s revenue from $250,000 to $500,000 and cultivated and secured first-time five-figure gift. Prior to Special Olympics, Sandra served as Donor Relations Officer for The Twenty-First Century Foundation. Prior to the Foundation, Sandra was the Giving Society Manager for The National Audubon Society. Sandra also served as Director of Major Gifts and Senior Fundraising Manager, managing corporate and foundation relations for United Way of New York City. Sandra has more than eight years of development experience and a Masters of Public Administration from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service. She is also an active member of Women in Development and Association for Fundraising Professionals.
