Over the next decade, trillions of dollars will be donated to nonprofit organizations through planned gifts. These are most often unrestricted bequests of many thousands of dollars and they can make or break fundraising campaigns. You need to make sure you understand the motivations and challenges for donors and their advisors, know how to set realistic goals, and plan how you will attract and close these gifts.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Planned giving vehicles and how they work
  • Special stewardship plans for top-level donors
  • Customizing a planned giving program for your organization
  •  Keeping your donors involved and committed after the gift has been made

After the program, you'll have a better understanding of (i) planned giving principles and practices, and (ii) how to implement a successful planned giving program.  This session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Speakers for this session:

Joseph Gillmer, CFRE, CSPG
Vice President
Community Counselling Service Co., LLC (CCS)

Joseph Gillmer, CFRE, CSPG has served charities with campaign management, major gift development, organizational development, planning studies and public relations—helping to raise over $250 million for diverse social causes since 2001. Mr. Gillmer provides planned giving guidance for 30 CCS colleagues and clients in seven states. Recently, Mr. Gillmer earned the Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) professional designation from the American Institute of Philanthropic Studies. He earned his Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation in 2007. Honored as the “Jaycee of the Year,” by the California Junior Chamber in 2007, Mr. Gillmer is extremely active in community service. He is an active member of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals, the California and U.S. Junior Chamber, the National Committee on Planned Giving and the Planned Giving Round Table of Southern California. Mr. Gillmer earned two Bachelor degrees (Journalism and Political Science) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

William McMorran

William C. McMorran developed the Green Oak Consulting Group in 1984 with a commitment to meeting the changing financial needs of tax exempt organizations. Green Oak’s services include charitable gift planning, investment and administration as well as long-term care insurance services and CCRC risk-management. Prior to founding Green Oak in 1984, Mr. McMorran had worked for ten years with AARP in Washington D.C. Over that ten year period, he initially developed AARP’s Tax-Aide program. In 1989, he expanded his firm’s service to include charitable gift planning, offering charitable organizations an array of support services that help them reach out to older donors and clients. Mr. McMorran is a graduate of Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary with post-graduate work at the USC Andrus School of Gerontology.

Claudia Sangster
Director, Phlanthropy, Estate & Trust Services

Claudia Sangster is Director of Philanthropy, Estate & Trust Services with Harris myCFO, Inc., a service within the Harris Private Bank, and President and Executive Director of the myCFO Foundation, a public charity which sponsors donor advised funds. She has over 27 years experience working with wealthy families to design and implement their estate and philanthropic strategies. Ms. Sangster earned a bachelor’s degree from Pepperdine University and her law degree from the University of Houston. She is a Board member of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute and Trustee of the Nicholas Endowment. Ms. Sangster is a faculty member for the American Institute for Philanthropic Studies. She is a member of the state bar associations of Texas and California, the ABA and the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills Bar Associations. Ms. Sangster is former President of the Planned Gving Round Table of Southern CA.
