Your board can be among your most powerful fundraising assets. That is, if you use it correctly. Too often, the board is not involved in fundraising or views fundraising as a daunting task. The result is that many board members neglect their responsibilities, which are then left to staff members who have too many other responsibilities already. To address this problem, your board members need to be reminded of the importance of their fundraising responsibilities, and learn concrete tools and techniques that make fundraising a rewarding task.

Topics we will cover include:
  • Why board members fear fundraising, and what you can do about it 
  • What board members need to know to start fundraising
  • Steps for energizing your board even when you are not on the board
  • How to deal with board members who won't fundraise even when they know they should
  • Building and maintaining the fundraising partnership between the board and  development staff
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to energize theirs board members about fundraising. The session is designed for beginning to intermediate fundraisers.
Speakers for this session:

Camille Levee

Glendale Healthy Kids

Camille brings more than 25 years of experience as CEO of small to mid-size non-profits. In her current position, she initiated a successful endowment campaign this year resulting in $30,000 raised in a 2 month period working closely with board members to raise the funds. Prior to joining Glendale Healthy Kids in 2006, she was Director of Development for Haven House in Pasadena, following a 20 year career with the Girl Scouts in 4 states. An active volunteer in the community, Camille has received the Pasadena Chamber`s Chairman`s Award in 2006, was recognized by the Verdugo Hills Business & Professional Women as Woman of the Year 2007, The California State Legislature as Woman of the Year in 2007, and Executive Director of the Year as part of the CA Legislature`s Women in Business Awards 2008. A native of Chicago, she attended Northwestern University.

Randi Sunshine
Director of Development
Disability Rights Legal Center

In her 20 years of development experience, Randi Sunshine has raised funds and managed grants for colleges, hospitals, and various social service agencies dealing with issues of homelessness, mental health, and literacy. Ms. Sunshine has worked with the Boards of the American Friends of Assaf Medical Center, National Council of Jewish Women, LA, Beyond Shelter, and currently, the Disability Rights Legal Center, to increase individual board giving, establish advisory boards, and help existing board members reach their personal board obligations. In her present position, as Director of Development, she is responsible for $1.8 million in income from grants, special events, sponsorships and individual donations. Ms. Sunshine is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, where she is Co-Chair of the Diversity Committee for the Southern California Chapter, and a member of the American Association of Grant Professionals. She holds an A.B. in Political Science from Vassar College.
