How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers

The relationship between awarding bodies and grant applicants seems to be based on a power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. According to recent reports, however, grant-makers are coming to realise that both sides achieve more if the playing field is more level.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grant-maker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face-to-face meetings: when should you try to meet in person and what should those meetings be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the funding officer to look at a more unconventional project
  • The funding officer as advocate: how to convert the grant-making officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When “no” means “not yet”: turning a rebuff or refusal into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant-seekers who understand the importance of building relationships with grant-makers, but have not yet found the best ways to do this successfully.
