Finding Funders: the art of successful research

According to a recent survey of grant-makers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognised that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organisation will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grant-awarding bodies in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grant-makers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation’s priorities are compatible with your organisation
This session is ideal for people new to applying for grants and who need step-by-step guidance on how to find appropriate funding.

Louise James
Grants and Communications Manager
Hilton in the Community Foundation

Louise James began her career in the City at an American investment bank before moving into the charity sector in 2001. At the Aga Khan Foundation (UK) she created and headed up a new role in corporate fundraising. In 2005, Louise moved to Hilton in the Community Foundation, liaising with Hilton Hotels on their employee fundraising initiatives as well as local grant-making preferences. As the Foundation has expanded during the last two years, Louise has focused on its grant-making activities, overseeing the distribution of £1.2m each year to hundreds of children`s charities primarily in the UK and Ireland. The Foundation`s grant fund is raised through the efforts of Hilton team members, guests, suppliers and the general public, so fundraising remains the primary function of Hilton in the Community Foundation.
