Capital campaigns
 

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Melinda Conway Callahan, CFRE
President
Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation

Melinda Conway Callahan, President, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation has 22 years of extensive experience in the non-profit development field, raising money from individual donors, foundations and corporate givers. Her most recent success was the completion of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan’s first $2.6 million capital and endowment campaign in May 2007 for Green Houses, an alternative form of skilled nursing care. She was awarded a $200,000 Kresge Foundation Capital Challenge grant and all campaign fundraising goals were exceeded. She started at The Detroit Medical Center from 1988 to 1992 where she raised $3 million through major and planned gift solicitation, identification, cultivation and solicitation of donor prospects at all levels; from 1995 to 2003 at Rochester Community Schools she raised $3 million over a 5 year period with annual revenue of $750,000. She serves on the board of directors for AFP Foundation, Rochester Community Schools Foundation and AFP

Kristine Miller, CFRE
Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving
The Episcopal Diocese of Michigan

In her current position, Kristine serves on the Bishop’s Executive Staff and assists ninety congregations and affiliated organizations with raising funds for ministry. She has held this position since 2006. Prior to this position, Kristine was a Senior Vice President in the Church Division of Cargill Associates, a national stewardship consulting firm dedicated to raising funds for churches and non-profit institutions across the United States. During her tenure with Cargill Associates, Kristine assisted a wide variety of churches of various denominations, sizes, styles and locations in raising over $56 million dollars for major capital projects and ongoing ministries. A native of Ohio, she did her undergraduate work in Business Administration at the Ohio State University and received her M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University. In 2007, Kristine achieved CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) credentials.
