Winning proposals: a tour of four successful case studies

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out above the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winners so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:

The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favorable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the comfort they need that you will be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way that the funder can immediately understand them
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls that bedevil this section of the proposal
  • Sources of support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don't have them?
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.
Speakers for this session:

Lisa Johnstone
Director of Program Development
Wayne-Metropolitan Community Action Agency

In her current position, Lisa specializes in program development and proposal writing. She estimates submitting over 30 funding proposals per year and over the past two years raised more than $3.5 million, including multi-year grants from private, state, local, and federal sources. She has worked with preschool, workforce development, school-age youth, senior citizens, people with disabilities, as well as children with life-threatening illnesses. Lisa has a Bachelor’s Degree in speech-language pathology from Bloomsburg University and a Master’s Equivalent. She is an AFP member and serves on local non-profit boards.

Megan Keup
Manager of Donor Relations & Prospect Research
Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation

Megan has served as Manager of Donor Relations & Prospect Research for Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation since March 2006. Her responsibilities include management of the donor database, oversight of funder and donor research, grant writing and reporting, manages annual giving, direct mail and donor communication pieces. She is a 2004 BSW graduate of Michigan State University and a 2005 MSW graduate of University of Michigan. Megan manages the grant proposal research, writing and reporting process and currently oversees over $135,000 of grant awarded funds. She worked as a key member of the team that secured a $200,000 Kresge Foundation Capital Challenge grant in May 2007.
