How to build a successful relationship with grantmakers

The relationship between grantmaker and grant seeker seems at first blush to contain a major power imbalance: one side has money, the other needs it. However, according to recent reports, grantmakers are coming to realize that the interests of both sides are met when  the playing field is more level. 

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of honesty: how much to tell a grantmaker in the beginning and as the relationship evolves
  • Face to face meetings: when should your pursue them and what should they be about?
  • Going off the beaten path: convincing the program officer to look at a more unconventional program
  • The program officer as advocate: how to convert a program officer into your most important supporter within and outside the foundation
  • When "no" means "not yet": turning a rebuff or a declination into a relationship-building opportunity
This session is intended for grant seekers who understand the importance of relationship building with grantmakers, but have not yet figured out how to do it successfully.
Speakers for this session:

Terri Covington
Director of Development
Detroit Central City Community Mental Health

Terri brings 24 years as a Law Enforcement professional to her new position at DCC. During her time in Law Enforcement, she served 7 years as the Grants Administrator. After working in Law Enforcement, and before joining DCC, Terri worked as the Coordinator of Grants and Contracts for Valencia Community College (Orlando, FL). Terri has been able to build relationships with grantors at the Federal, state local and foundation levels, and has had extensive experience working with non-profit youth organizations. In her new position,Terri`s role will enhance the new direction and continued growth of DCC. Terri holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee State University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Detroit Mercy.

John Greenhoe, CFRE
Director of Foundation Relations and Development Communications
Western Michigan University

John has more than 20 years of experience in non-profit leadership roles. He has worked at WMU since 2001, and his current responsibilities include establishing and cultivating new relationships with local, regional and national foundations. He has a proven record of success in attracting investments from foundations with little or no previous connection to the University. Prior to WMU, Greenhoe served as Director of Development and Assistant Executive Director for the Greater Kalamazoo Area American Red Cross. He was a featured speaker at the 2008 AFP International Conference in San Diego, and currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in the WMU School of Public Affairs and Administration, teaching the University`s fundraising course. Greenhoe has an MA degree in Philanthropy and Development from Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota, and obtained his Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential in 2000.
