A well functioning board of directors is essential for a nonprofit’s success, and without it, your organization will have limited ability to accomplish its mission. This session will examine some examples of highly functioning boards, and distill the keys to their success.
The session will also explore the following topics:
- The core responsibilities of a nonprofit board - Structuring your board for maximum effectiveness (size, diversity, skills, etc.) - Proven techniques and approaches for board assessment and recruitment - Getting your board back on track when it appears to have lost its way - Ways to make the most of the board-executive relationship You will walk away from this session with fresh ideas on how to optimize your board`s performance. This session is intended for board members and executive level staff who work closely with their boards.
Ann has been involved in development for 20 years. In her current position, she provides strategic planning, board development and fundraising services to nonprofits. Since 2000 she has served more than 50 nonprofits of all sizes. Recent board development clients include San Diego Museum of Art, Colorado Music Festival, Global Education Fund, eTown, and Golden West Foundation. Previously, as Director of Corporate Relations at the Museum of Science and Industry, Ann staffed a high-level board of directors in all areas of corporate, foundation and government relations. She supported board efforts for an $11 million capital campaign to preserve the U-505 Submarine. Before that, she was a founding board member of Wonder Works, a children's museum in Oak Park, Illinois, where she recruited a board of directors and helped lead them through program development, capital fundraising, and public relations. Ann currently serves on the Executive Committee of Impact on Education, Boulder, Colorado. She earned a BA in Philosophy from University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. She is a member of Colorado Nonprofit Association. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Adult Education at DePaul University and is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE).
Renee has been a consultant for the past five years and a development professional four years previous focusing on board development and fundraising. Her past and present clients include Boys and Girls Clubs, Junior Achievement, The ARC of San Diego, Chula Vista Nature Center, and Behavioral Diabetes Institute. As Board Development Consultant at the Chula Vista Nature Center, Renee created a board development plan, identified, recruited, and oriented new board members. She completed board talent assessments, developed board application materials, explained their roles and responsibilities, and completed the interview process. She also created the board manual and orientation materials, and developed annual board evaluation methods. Renee currently serves as on the University of San Diego School of Leadership Alumni Council and the San Diego Women Film Foundation Board. She earned a Masters in nonprofit leadership and management from the University of San Diego and a Certificate in Fundraising and Development from University of California, San Diego. She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Mark has been involved in planning and development for 17 years. He currently serves as the Principal Owner of Mountain Sage Consulting and also as Vice President for Planning and Project Development for the YMCA of the Rockies. In both venues, Mark specializes in working with the boards of nonprofits to design planning models that lead to visionary opportunities and record fundraising. Mark organization's realized unprecedented record-level giving performances as a result of actively engaging the Board in the planning and development process. Previously, as Affiliate Consultant at Growth Design Corporation, Mark worked with nonprofit boards on governance issues, strategic planning, financial management and development. Mark currently serves as a trustee for Estes Park Medical Center, and as an advisor to many organizations. He earned B.S. in Business Administration from University of Nebraska and a Graduate in Financial Management from University of Delaware. He is a member of numerous professional organizations.
Ashley has been involved in nonprofit leadership, fundraising and programming for 20 years. In her current position, she develops training sessions on board development, fundraising and organizational effectiveness. Ashley has developed customized board training sessions for over 30 community and faith-based organizations. In addition she has facilitated numerous board planning sessions that focus on identifying effective strategies for organizational sustainability and growth. Through the Colorado Compassion Initiative, she provides technical assistance aimed at capacity building. She monitors business and nonprofit trends to ensure that JVA, and its clients, are on the cutting edge of innovation. Ashley serves as a board member for Novo Restoration, Inc. She earned a M.A. in Art History from University of Denver and a B.A. in Technical Journalism from Colorado State University. Her personal interests are vast and she loves the opportunity to work with people who are passionate about making a difference in the world.

The Chambers Center is Light Rail accessible. Light Rail runs parallel to I-25 and the University of Denver station is across the street from the north side of campus (Routes at DU Station E, F & H). The Light Rail station is three blocks from Chambers Center. The website is http://www.rtd-denver.com. From Downtown Denver (Market Street Station, Union Station or the 16th Street Mall) Take the E, F or H lines to University of Denver Station, which is north of Buchtel Boulevard at High Street. From Littleton Station, take the C or D Lines North to Broadway Station then transfer to the Southbound E, F, or H Line to University of Denver Station. From Denver International Airport, take the AF bus (located just outside either East or West baggage claim level, on the outermost island of the “Ground Transportation” section outside – look for “RTD- Public Bus” signs). The cost of this bus is $8 (exact change only). Upon boarding, be sure to ask for a “transfer.” Get off at Market Street Station. To get to DU from Market Street Station, exit the South door and walk to the island to take the Free 16th Street Mall Shuttle either 1.) East to Stout Street. Get off at Stout Street and take the F or H Light Rail lines SOUTH to University of Denver Station OR 2.) West to Union Station, take the E Light Rail line SOUTH to University of Denver Station. Use your transfer ticket you received from the bus so that you do not have to buy a ticket on light rail.

Walk south straight across Buchtel Boulevard toward High Street. Continue up High street to the corner of High and Asbury Avenue. The Chambers Center will be on your left, with the entrance on Asbury Avenue.

If Traveling Southbound on I-25 from Thornton If traveling south on I-25 take University Blvd Exit 205. Turn right (south). Continue on University Blvd to East Asbury Avenue then turn right.
