Capital campaigns
 

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

 

Speakers for this session:

Sally Foss
Senior Manager, Major Gifts
Special Transit

Sally’s career includes more than 15 years of non-profit management and fundraising experience in the Omaha Metro and Boulder areas. During that time, she has done capital campaign planning and management, feasibility studies, major gifts, volunteer cultivation, grant writing and corporate relations. Before joining Special Transit, she was the first executive director of the Performing Arts & Education Association of Southwest Iowa. There she developed initial arts programming, and planned, implemented and managed a $7.5 million capital campaign that achieved goal within two years. Significant achievements include a $4.5 million individual gift and a $1 million grant. Sally is currently managing a $2.5 million private capital campaign, which is part of an $11.25 million building project. She has served on numerous boards, and is now a board member for A Woman’s Work in Longmont. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Lenna Kottke

Special Transit

Lenna Kottke has served as executive director of Special Transit, a Boulder-based nonprofit organization, since 1991. In this position, she oversees a $12 million dollar budget for a nonprofit that provides mobility services to more than 2,000 people annually. Special Transit is currently engaged in plans to build a new $11 million facility in the next 18 months, including a capital campaign to raise $2.6 million. A graduate of Stanford University, she serves on the Board of the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies, is a state delegate to the Community Transit Association of America, and is a founding member of the Denver Regional Mobility and Access Council.

Ann Roecker

Roecker Consulting Group LLC

Ann runs a leading fundraising consulting firm with capital campaign ranging from $1 million to $200 million. Capital campaigns and feasibility study successes include Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council, The Gathering Place, Vail Valley Medical Center, Inner City Health Center, Women`s Foundation of Colorado, St. Francis Center, and Brent`s Place, among others. She has worked with top Colorado donors and helped raised some of Colorado`s largest gifts. The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation named Ann as one of Colorado’s “Fundraising Deans.” She has served as President of the Board for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)/Colorado Chapter and on the Regional Board for the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy. She graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism; the Institute for International Training, and from Stanford University’s Non-Profit Management Institute. She has traveled throughout the world and worked in Kenya, Ivory Coast and the Philippines.
