Fundraising in the one-person development shop: making the most of a shoestring budget

At the best of times, fundraising can be challenging. However, fundraising in the one person development shop can be daunting, especially when one is working with a shoestring budget. The key in situations like these is to know what areas to prioritize, and how to get the biggest bang for your buck because you can't do it all.  This seminar will focus on the issues unique to one person fundraising departments, and will drill down in the following areas:
  • Keeping your organization on track financially: create and maintain a year-round fundraising plan
  • Research: research your prospects on a shoestring budget
  • Direct mail: work with an established third party service provider to maximize your returns
  • Major gifts program: develop and maintain a manageable high dollar giving club
  • Planned giving: start simple with a wills and bequests program
  • Donor solicitation: make it easy for your donors to give and for you to receive donations
  • Special events: conduct a unique annual event that makes efficient use of volunteers
  • Leadership involvement: find creative ways to get your executive director and/or board involved in the fundraising process
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to take their one person development shop to the next level.
Speakers for this session:

Dawn Engle
CoFounder and Executive Director
PeaceJam Foundation

Dawn Engle has been fundraising for nonprofit organizations for over 18 years and has extensive experience with special events, major gifts, annual giving campaigns, media relations, and donor engagement. As one of the founders of the PeaceJam Foundation, Dawn was part of a two person staff that developed funding strategies for the initial launch of PeaceJam programming across the globe. Since then, limited resources have required her to serve as both Executive Director and as a one-person development shop. Dawn graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in Economics. She is also the founder of Colorado Friends of Tibet and spent 13 years working for the U.S. Congress. Dawn has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize six times by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and five other leading Nobel Peace Laureates.

Chanda Hinton
Executive Director
The Chanda Plan Foundation

Chanda was accidentally shot in the neck by a 22-rifle at age nine, resulting in Spinal Cord Injury. She has limited function from the chest down, but with that she has created purpose and perseverance. In 2006, she developed a non-profit organization known as The Chanda Plan Foundation, which improves the quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities through education and programs to access integrative/alternative therapies. As the Executive Director and only staff member, she has become an expert in creative fundraising. With only 4 years of experience, her passion has delivered success by bringing in $60,000 at their 2nd annual benefit. Chanda is getting her Masters in Non-profit Management at Regis University.

Stacey Saggese
Development Director
Rocky Mountain MicroFinance Institute

As the Development Director for a 100% volunteer-led organization, Stacey is responsible for managing all development relationships, including foundations, corporations, and individual donors. She has faced the unique challenge of not only funding a start-up organization on a non-existent budget, but also with restoring the good reputation of a mission within a relatively small funding community. Her approach to development is largely relationship based, engaging potential funders in the development of the organization through input of ideas and information, not just through dollars. She also employs a collaborative approach to fundraising, utilizing both the time and talents of my fellow staff members, as well as creative community partnerships that increase the impact of our work and bolster related requests for funding.

Seth Winnerman
Executive Director
cityWILD

Seth Winnerman has over 10 years of youth work, informal education, leadership development and non-profits. He started at cityWILD in February 2008 with the organization was under severe financial constraints. In his first seven months, Seth helped cityWILD navigate from an $80,000 YTD loss to only a $12,000 loss at year-end through fund-raising and smart financial decision making. For fiscal year 2008-2009, cityWILD finished in the black for the first time in three years. Seth has served on three different community boards, participated in numerous volunteer and environmental events and volunteered at organizations such as Urban Peak and the Ronald McDonald House. He has a B.S. in Business from the University of Kansas and is currently in the midst of completing his capstone project for his Masters in Non-Profit Management from Regis University in Denver.
