Winning proposals: a tour of three successful case studies
 

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out above the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winners so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:

The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favorable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the comfort they need that you will be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way that the funder can immediately understand them
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls that bedevil this section of the proposal
  • Sources of support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don't have them?
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.
Speakers for this session:

Heather Jackson
Director of Corporate Development
Aurora Mental Health Center

Before joining the Aurora Mental Health Center (AuMHC) system in 1997, Heather worked in development at Commerce City and Big Brother Big Sisters of Colorado. At AuMHC, Heather has served in a variety of roles including volunteer/intern director, development director and the Executive Director of Providers’ Resource Clearinghouse, a fully owned subsidiary of AuMHC. In the last year, Heather has worked with teams to bring in $1 million of grant funding. Some of the most significant proposals include funding from the Veterans Administration and the Statewide Strategic Use Fund. Heather graduated in 2001 with a MBA, major in Health Administration, from University of Colorado.

Kathleen May-Rosenfeld
CFRE, Fundraising & Corporate Social Venture Specialist
KMR Nonprofit Development

Kathleen May-Rosenfeld, CFRE, has worked as a fundraiser, development consultant and nonprofit executive for 11+ years. Her 15 years prior experience working in marketing, PR and communications for corporations has provided her with a unique perspective on developing and key relationships with corporate funders, which have led to grant and sponsorship proposals resulting in $10 million in corporate, governmental and foundation giving. Kathleen`s cultivation work and grants have funded education, affordable housing, the arts, legal skills training, the environment and social services. She trains nonprofit boards and staffs on fund development and advancement. Kathleen works directly with nonprofits to identify and pursue corporate funding and cause marketing opportunities. She has a BA in English and Education from Western Washington University and is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). Kathleen is a member of the Assoc of Fundraising Professionals, Nat`l Association of Professional Women and Colorado Nonprofit Association.

Tamra Ryan

Women`s Bean Project

Since joining the Women`s Bean Project in 2003, Tamra has transformed the organization from a state of crisis to financial stability. By drawing on her experience in marketing and business development in small and start-up companies, she led her team to reshape the program operations to achieve a greater focus on outcomes. With her leadership they became focused income mix and where grants fit, allowing the Bean Project to paint a clearer picture in proposals of how grants help to fulfill the mission. Most of Women’s Bean Project’s grant proposals are funded and Ryan will share their recipe for success, from preliminary conversations to the key elements of winning proposals. Additionally, Ryan is a board member with Social Venture Partners-Denver, a national network that gives grants to emerging nonprofits to help them move to stability. Through SVP she has seen a wide variety of grant proposals and funder relationships.
