Finding Corporate Funders: the art of successful research
 

Corporate foundations must file 990-PFs where they record their grants. But if a corporation makes its charitable contributions directly from the company itself, a listing of its grants may not be so easy to find. This session will help you identify the most important sources of corporate funding. In particular, you will learn how to use the online resources to identify possible sources of corporate funding. In particular, this session will examine how you can use:
  • The websites of the corporations themselves to uncover details of of their corporate contributions and community relations activities
  • Online grants databases such as the Foundation Center's Corporate Giving Online and NOZA, as well as other online directories
  • Creative searches on Google to identify undiscovered sources of corporate funding 
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate funding from corporations.

Cindy Acree
State Representative
State of Colorado

Colorado State Representative Cindy Acree is an organizational development consultant and President of Protektmark LLC. She has spent over twenty years helping companies and nonprofit organizations develop relationships that can help grow their businesses. Her expertise has been used by government agencies, energy and health care organizations and small businesses to identify and expand revenue streams and new funding sources. She has served as Chairman of the City of Aurora Budget Committee and on the Health and Human Services and Local Government Committees of the Colorado State Legislature as well as hospital boards and the Chairwoman of the Colorado Neurological Institute. A former columnist for the Colorado Lawyer on law office management, she has been featured numerous times on television and radio. Representative Acree holds degrees from Southern Methodist University and the University of Denver College of Law where she taught.

In her current position, Dixie helps budding nonprofit leaders to identify research solutions to develop and build their organizations. For the past twelve years, she has been a presenter at the SCORE monthly business planning workshops at the Denver Small Business Administration helping their clients understand how to do sophisticated research using Library resources. She also participates in programming involving market research with area Small Business Development Center NxLevel classes, Mi Casa, and vocational schools and training programs. Dixie is actively involved in the committees and boards of many non-profit organizations including the Goldent Triangle Arts District, the Denver Press Club, the Governor`s Residence Preservation Fund, and the Rocky Mountain Microfinance Institute. She earned a BA degree from the University of Colorado at Denver.

Scott Shirai

Nurse-Family Partnership

Scott has been the Chief Development Officer with Nurse Family Partnership since March 2009. He has more than 30 years of successful experience as an entrepreneur and change agent in the non-profit and for-profit sectors. He’s received national acclaim for leadership, innovation, fundraising and volunteerism. Scott was previously Vice President, Donor Relations at Mile High United Way. While there, he was honored with an Innovator’s Award at the White House three consecutive years for fundraising, research, and marketing; as well as his work in successfully restarting the New Orleans Combined Federal Campaign after the city was crippled by Hurricane Katrina. Before moving to Denver, Scott administered one of Hawaii’s largest corporate foundations. He crafted and implemented its first strategic plan to refocus giving and aligned volunteer activities with the corporate mission and goals resulting in the organization being named Outstanding Corporation by the National Society of Fundraising Executives.
