Proposal writing

Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:
  •  The essential components of a grant proposal package
  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool
You'll go back to the office with a well honed plan for ensuring that your proposals cover the right bases every time.

Speakers for this session:

Martha Holley-Miers
Director of Grants
Higher Achievement

Martha has been involved in development for seven years. In her current position, she is responsible for stewarding relationships with corporate, foundation, and government funders, whose support makes up approximately 85 percent of Higher Achievement's $2.6 million budget. In addition to securing the organization's operating funds, Martha also led the fundraising efforts to support Higher Achievement's upcoming expansion to serve the Ward 8 community. Previously, as Associate Director of Major Donors at Whitman-Walker Clinic, Martha oversaw relationships with the Clinic's 600 major donors, building on her previous experiences managing that organization's special events program. Her time spent managing individual donor relationships at the Clinic informs Martha's efforts to steward strong connections with Higher Achievement's varied institutional funders. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in History from Kenyon College. She is a member of the Association for Fundraising Professionals and a past nominee for the Young Women of Achievement Award from the Women's Information Network. Martha enjoys volunteering with Higher Achievement's scholars as a weekly mentor, instructing 5th graders in creative writing and math.
