Winning a grant isn't easy and often the process of writing a proposal seems intimidating. Most of the difficulty comes from not knowing what exactly goes into an effective proposal. This session will cover the following topics:

  •  Important writing techniques that make your proposal stand out from the pile
  •  Layout and design of a strong proposal
  •  Customizing a proposal to match a grant maker's interest and using your proposal as a relationship building tool

Joseph Barbato

Barbato Associates

Joseph Barbato has more than 30 years of experience in development communications, including stints as a senior writer and editorial director in major capital campaigns at NYU and The Nature Conservancy. His consulting firm produces proposals, case statements, brochures, and other persuasive pieces for the major gifts programs of such clients as the Brookings Institution, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the National Wildlife Federation, The George Washington University, the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. He has led seminars on writing for the Kresge Foundation and Duke University. A columnist for Contributions magazine, Joe is the author of several books, including Writing for a Good Cause and How to Write Knockout Proposals. He earned an M.A. at NYU and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Authors Guild.

Teri Blandon, CFRE

Teri Blandon, CFRE has written numerous proposals to foundations, corporations and government agencies during her 20+ years in nonprofits. She is currently the director of foundation and government development at WETA, the flagship public broadcasting station in greater DC, securing funds for television, radio, multimedia and capital projects. Prior to WETA, she was the senior director for resource development and strategic planning at WorldSpace Foundation, and the first assistant director of CIVICUS, a global alliance of donors and NGOs. She has also worked at the two leading nonprofit associations, Independent Sector and the Council on Foundations. Teri earned a B.S. in Biology and an Honors Degree in Humanities from LeMoyne College, and an M.A. in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University. She is a member of AFP-DC, and the American Association of Grant Professionals` National Capital Area chapter.

Jayme Sokolow

The Development Source, Inc.

In his career as a fundraiser and consultant, Jayme has developed proposals to over 200 foundations, corporate giving sources, and individual donors that have raised over $1 billion. He has also written over a dozen articles on proposal writing in such publications as Nonprofit Times, Entrepreneur magazine, Washington Business Journal, Digital Communities, and Proposal Management, and given workshops on proposal development at the US Small Business Administration, Howard University, and other venues. He has been the president of two nonprofit organizations and currently serves as a board member of a foundation and two nonprofit organizations. Jayme is a 1972 graduate of New York University and has a doctoral degree in History.
