As the grant seeking process becomes more and more competitive, it is  essential to understand what grantmakers are actually looking for when they decide whether or not to award a grant. This session offers an unusual opportunity to hear directly from a variety of corporate, community, private and family foundation funders, and consists of two parts:

A. Panel Discussion
In the first two hours, grantmakers from a variety of private, corporate and family foundations will participate in a panel discussion. Issues we will explore with the panelists include:
  • Foundation culture: what kinds of projects do grantmakers like to fund?
  • Winning proposals: what makes them stand out?
  • Foundation guidelines: are they set in stone?
  • Building the relationship: what gives foundations confidence in the organizations they fund?
Whether you have been securing grants for decades or are just starting out, the panel discussion will provide you with a valuable view of the grantmaking world from the point of view of the grantmaker.

B. Q&A session
In the third hour, the grantmakers will join attendees at at their tables to answer specific questions.  Grantmakers will switch every 15 minutes to a different table to ensure that everyone in the room is able to ask them questions.

Speakers for this session:

Jana Davis
Associate Director for Programs
Chesapeake Bay Trust

Dr. Jana Davis is the Associate Director for Programs and Chief Scientist at the Chesapeake Bay Trust, an organization that funds watershed restoration and education projects. She oversees the nine grant programs administered by the Trust, and specifically runs programs on shoreline restoration, fisheries habitat, targeted watershed restoration, and innovation. Jana is a marine ecologist, with a B.S. in biology from Yale University and a Ph.D. in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Prior to coming to the Trust, Jana served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, a faculty member at the Williams College-Mystic Seaport Maritime Studies Program, and an American Association for the Advancement of Science Congressional Science Fellow in the United State Senate, sponsored by the American Geophysical Union.

Julie Kennedy
Programs Manager
Merck Childhood Asthma Network

Julie joined Merck in 2004 as Grants Manager for the Merck Institute of Aging & Health (MIAH). Prior to joining Merck, she served as the Senior Research Coordinator in the Office for University Development and Alumni Relations at New York University, where she worked on major gift fundraising strategies. As the Programs Manager at MCAN, Julie oversees and manages the MCAN grantees, which includes serving as the principal liaison to the program sites, monitoring grantee performance, and facilitating grantee communications and networking. She also provides oversight for the independent cross-site evaluation of MCAN programs. Additionally, Julie assists in the administration and ongoing operations of the Network and actively participates in helping to publicize MCAN’s mission and expand its program portfolio. She received her B.A. in Sociology and English from Tulane University and completed her M.P.A. in public policy and nonprofit management at New York University.

Lee Parker
Senior Program Officer
The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region

Lee has nine years of experience in program development and management for both community-based organizations and foundations. In her current position at CFNCR, she manages initiatives focused on increasing economic opportunities for youth and low-income families through education and career development opportunities. Lee also co-chairs the Black Philanthropic Alliance, a premier membership organization in the Greater Washington region focused on increasing the presence and leadership of people of African descent in the philanthropic sector. Prior to joining The Community Foundation, Lee managed the grants and special programs for the Prince George’s Community Foundation for three years.
