Capital campaigns

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

Judith Carey
Development Director
Cuyahoga County Public Library

Judith has over ten years experience in senior level fundraising, management, community collaboration and organizational management. Her management experience ranges from the start-up level to overseeing a Development operation with 11 employees and 4 consultants. She has raised $2.6 million in annual revenue, and $21 million in Capital Campaign revenue. This includes major gifts, planned giving, foundations & corporations, annual fund, and special events. Judith has previous experience in local, state, and federal government relations and lobbying for capital and operating requests. .

Terry Fairholm
President/Owner
Advancement Partners, Inc.

Terry has been in the development consulting business since 1989, and in his current position as a consultant, he specializes in development consulting and capital campaign management for private secondary education. From 1986 to 1989, he served as Regional Director of Development during Notre Dame’s $450 million “Strategic Moment” capital campaign supervising the entire fundraising operation in a ten state area and eastern Canada. Since then, Terry has been involved in over four hundred capital campaigns, conducted over 4,000 personal solicitation calls and participated in numerous other advancement-related projects including annual fund, strategic planning, development assessments and Board development. He earned both a BBA (Marketing) and MBA (Management) from the University of Notre Dame.

Catherine Fynes
Senior Consultant
Benefactor Group

Catherine has been involved in development for 25 years. In her current position, she is responsible for providing consultation to a collaboration of early learning centers engaged in a $15 million capital campaign. She is providing interim development management services to a local arts organization under reorganization. Furthermore, she is providing consultation to a Columbus area hospital employee campaign as part of its $250+ million capital campaign. Additionally, she conducts development assessments and assists with developing plans for endowment campaigns, annual fund campaigns. Previously, as Executive Director at Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus, Catherine was responsible for overall management and fiscal responsibilities of the organization of 35 staff and a youth membership of 3,000. Before that, she worked as Director of Resouce Development at Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo where she was responsible for marketing and fundraising activities including annual fund, foundation and corporate giving, individual giving, special event, planned giving, etc. She earned B.S. in Journalism from Ohio University. She is a member of Central Ohio AFP, serving on the Mentoring and the Youth in Philanthropy committees. She has received numerous awards/citations for her work. Previously, Catherine was president of Northwest Ohio AFP and President of Leadership Toledo.
