Fundraising in the one-person development shop: making the most of a shoestring budget

At the best of times, fundraising can be challenging. However, fundraising in the one person development shop can be daunting, especially when one is working with a shoestring budget. The key in situations like these is to know what areas to prioritize, and how to get the biggest bang for your buck because you can't do it all.  This seminar will focus on the issues unique to one person fundraising departments, and will drill down in the following areas:
  • Keeping your organization on track financially: create and maintain a year-round fundraising plan
  • Research: research your prospects on a shoestring budget
  • Direct mail: work with an established third party service provider to maximize your returns
  • Major gifts program: develop and maintain a manageable high dollar giving club
  • Planned giving: start simple with a wills and bequests program
  • Donor solicitation: make it easy for your donors to give and for you to receive donations
  • Special events: conduct a unique annual event that makes efficient use of volunteers
  • Leadership involvement: find creative ways to get your executive director and/or board involved in the fundraising process
Attendees will walk away with fresh ideas to take their one person development shop to the next level.
Speakers for this session:

Velvettee Hux
Director, Program Development and Planning
Warren County Community Services (WCCS)

Entering barren office spaces, Velvettee has created and managed three diverse "one person" development offices - a graduate school, foodbank, and social service agency in the last 15 years. Currently, she is the Director of Program Development and Planning at Warren County Community Services, Inc. - the first development officer in the agency’s 40 year history. In this position, she provides donor relations, marketing, grant writing, direct mail, annual funds, special events, and capital campaign expertise to the multi-program agency. Having worked for 17 years in the corporate sector, she believes that non-profits can learn much from the corporate sector, and the corporate sectors can learn from non-profits. Integrating marketing, technology, and fundraising strategies is key to her success in a one-person development office. Vel is a graduate of University of Florida and Duquesne University.

Judy Rodgers
Director of Institutional Giving
Urbana University

Judy Rodgers is the Director of Institutional Giving at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio. In her present position she is responsible for all aspects of institutional fundraising from the annual fund to major gifts, board development, capital campaign, alumni outreach, and advancement services. She knows well the challenge of stretching to achieve high goals with little to no resources or staff. Prior to Urbana University, Judy was the Director of Capital Campaign, Director of Major Gifts and Director of Prospect Research at a brand new Catholic University in south Florida. Judy has a Masters in International Affairs from American University and a Bachelors in International Politics from Westminster College. She is a member of the Western Pennsylvania Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Andrea Victor
Development Director
Cascade Locks Park Association

Andrea has been in the non-profit sector since 2003, and she has been successful in marketing, branding, writing grants, and planning events with a very limited budget. In her current position, she is responsible for a small organization with a three person staff that serves as a visitor’s center and educational destination for the City of Akron. Andrea has written several articles for a local magazine discussing how to fundraise on a shoestring budget. She is presently the Board President of Fair Housing Contact Service, and she also helps the Red Cross with their fundraisers. Andrea earned a BS in Sales Marketing and Business Management, and is working on her MBA in marketing.
