Panel discussion and dialogue with Private Foundation Grantmakers

As the grant seeking process becomes more and more competitive, it is  essential to understand what grantmakers are actually looking for when they decide whether or not to award a grant. This session offers an unusual opportunity to hear directly from a variety of community, private and family foundation funders. Grantmakers from a variety of private, community and family foundations will participate in a panel discussion. Issues we will explore with the panelists include:
  • Foundation culture: what kinds of projects do grantmakers like to fund?
  • Winning proposals: what makes them stand out?
  • Foundation guidelines: are they set in stone?
  • Building the relationship: what gives foundations confidence in the organizations they fund?
Whether you have been securing grants for decades or are just starting out, the panel discussion will provide you with a valuable view of the grantmaking world from the point of view of the grantmaker.

Speakers for this session:

Eric Avner
Vice President and Senior Program Manager for Community Development
The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile/U.S. Bank Foundation

Since April 2008, Eric has directed the Foundation’s community development grantmaking, with a focus on supporting initiatives that strengthen Cincinnati’s distinctive urban neighborhoods, build a talented regional workforce, and encourage a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation. Previously, he served as Associate Director of the Cincinnati Business Committee, advising the region’s top CEOs on economic development issues. He also managed the City of Newport, Kentucky’s, downtown revitalization program, helping to convert an abandoned railroad bridge across the Ohio River into an award-winning linear pedestrian park. Eric currently serves on a number of local boards and committees, including the Cincinnati Development Fund, Cincinnati USA Regional Partnership, Enjoy-the-Arts, Know Theatre, Southbank Partners, United Way Research Council, and Vision 2015. In February, 2008, he launched Soapboxmedia.com, a weekly online magazine focusing on the economic and physical transformation of the Cincinnati region. Eric holds degrees from McGill and Cornell Universities.

Shepard (Shep) Englander
CEO
Jewish Federation of Cincinnati

Shep has supervised the Jewish Federation's grantmaking for five years. Since his arrival in 2004, he has restructured the Federation to be more collaborative, competitive, transparent, and responsive to its community and partners. He has improved community participation, reversed a downward-sliding annual campaign, and received multi-million dollar endowment gifts. Shep previously served as Vice President of the United Jewish Federation in Pittsburgh where he directed local and Israel/Overseas campaign initiatives, as well as foundation and government funding distributions. Before this, while working as an attorney in Washington, D.C., he represented not-for-profit clients in a public policy-related practice. Also in D.C., he served as Associate Director of United Jewish Communities, managing the public affairs operations of its public policy and lobbying office. Shep is a 1985 graduate of Tufts University and holds a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University Law School.

Director of Community Investment Grantmaking Services
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation

Jim is intimately familiar with the goals, challenges, and potential of Cincinnati-area private foundations and their grantees. Previously, he served as Vice President and Manager of the Charitable and Endowment Services division of PNC Bank for 17 years.
