Making the most of your volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of many nonprofits, yet many organizations find managing volunteers to be one of the most challenging aspects of nonprofit life. The key to a successful volunteer management program is the three R’s – recruiting, retaining and recognizing volunteers.

This session will explore some examples of successful volunteer programs, and address the following topics:
-    Why people volunteer
-    New ways to recruit, manage and place high quality volunteers
-    Revitalizing a volunteer program that has become stale
-    Ensuring collaboration between volunteers and staff
-    Effective ways to recognize your volunteers

If you are looking to initiate a new volunteer program, or enhance the success of an existing one this session is not to be missed. It is intended for board members, executive directors, senior staff and development staff.
Speakers for this session:

Janet Beals Orejudos
Chief Development Officer
Gads Hill Center

Janet has been in the development field for 25 years. In her current position, she manages a team of 3 professionals and up to 10 volunteers. With no volunteer coordinator on staff, her team responds to most volunteer requests, including many from the corporate world. Fundraising volunteer leaders at all levels are also a key part of her job as a development professional. As Executive Director for AIDS Walk Chicago, Janet managed a team of 10 organizers, 1500 volunteers who created an event for 20,000 walkers, including 1,000 corporate teams, raising $1.6 million. Janet currently serves as Facilitator, Board President and Head of Strategic Planning for the Open Studio Project in Evanston, a nonprofit that offers an art and writing process as a way to access one's creative problem solving abilities. She earned a BA in English from Florida State University and an MBA from Simmons Graduate School of Management, the only all woman business school. Janet has received the Golden Trumpet Award for marketing from the Publicity Club of Chicago, the Spirit of Rogers Park Award from the Rogers Park Community Council, and the Don Seiden Award for Lifetime Achievement from Evanston's Open Studio Project.
