Capital campaigns
 

Capital campaigns are both the best way for your organization to raise funds and the most misunderstood. Done successfully, they not only provide significant funds to improve facilities and enlarge endowments, they can also help your organization take stock in itself and prepare for the future. However, they involve a lot of work for board members, directors and staff. This workshop will help you determine how to get started and establish goals for each phase of the campaign, as well as define campaign timelines.

Topics we will cover include:
  •  What you need to know about a capital campaign before you start
  •  Understanding the typical flow of a campaign from feasibility study to public celebration
  •  Building a strong campaign team that includes both volunteers and professionals
  •  Understanding how prospect research and donor cultivation forms part of the campaign
  •  The art of skillful campaign communications before, during and after the campaign

After this session, you will know what lies behind a successful capital campaign, and whether your organization is ready to embark on it. The session is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraisers.

James Butcher, CFRE
Partner
Butcher & Briggs, LLC

James W. Butcher, CFRE, is a founding partner of Butcher & Briggs, LLC, Fundraising Counsel, and has over 35 years of professional experience in development and public relations. He has directed numerous multi-million dollar capital campaigns for hospitals, schools and colleges, health and social service agencies and other nonprofit organizations. He has conducted insurance-based life endowment campaigns, development audits and feasibility studies. He also trained campaign directors while a Senior Director at Ketchum, Inc., a national fundraising firm. From 1990 to 2000 he was Director of Development and PR for Baystate Franklin Medical Center. Prior to that he was an account executive with two advertising agencies and worked in Public Relations for the United Way and three fortune 500 firms. Butcher is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Western Mass. Chapter; and a board member of the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Arlene Fortunato
President
Fortunato Consulting Group

In 2003 Arlene Fortunato established Fortunato Consulting Group after a 25 year career as a community activist, nonprofit leader and corporate philanthropy executive. Understanding that traditional campaign strategies don’t always serve smaller organizations, Fortunato has applied an entrepreneurial approach to helping community organizations reach their goals by understanding existing assets, developing strategies to leverage relationships, identifying and cultivating new prospects and articulating the unique benefits to the community offered by their organizations. Fortunato creates campaign strategy, recruits and coaches leadership, oversees prospect research, proposal writing and special events and participates in solicitations. She has personally led three successful Kresge Foundation challenge grants, writing the proposal and developing and implementing the challenge grant strategy. Fortunato is a member of the Boston Club, the AFP, Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts, among others. She has a BA from Temple University.

Donald Keel
Consultant

Don Keel is a consultant in institutional advancement. He has been vice president for institutional advancement at two private colleges and associate vice chancellor for development at a state university. He has helped create two museums and a major equestrian center. He has had leadership roles in capital and comprehensive campaigns and has won national awards for advancement media. He co-authored a book on funding exploration, which emanated from workshops he conducted for the Explorers Club with the Discovery Channel and National Geographic. He has lectured in the United States and Canada for the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Mr. Keel is a native of New York City, an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and resides in Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island.
