Winning proposals: a tour of three successful case studies
 

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out above the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winners so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:

The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favorable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the comfort they need that you will be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way that the funder can immediately understand them
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls that bedevil this section of the proposal
  • Sources of support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don't have them?
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.
Speakers for this session:

Amanda Preston
Advancement and External Affairs Officer
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

In her current position, Amanda directs all philanthropic programs, government relations and external relations. Her experience includes higher education, science research, arts and culture, and independent consulting. In these positions, she has developed and submitted many successful proposals to government agencies, foundations and corporations and has mentored junior staff in this important activity. She taught at the Antioch/New England Graduate School for four years. Amanda has also been a past AFP Chapter president and held leadership roles with several professional organizations. She has presented at many conferences and teaches at local colleges. She has taught many workshops in proposal development and writing. Amanda graduated from Wellesley College and lives in Andover, Massachusetts.

Karen Watkins-Watts
Grants Administrator
Brockton Public Schools

Karen is a non-profit management executive who is accomplished in grant writing, fundraising, program development, agency management and leadership. In her current position, she works with curriculum directors and administrators to write grants to support education and enrichment programs for 15,600 K-12 students. Hence, she is responsible for overall management, as well as fiscal and programmatic compliance for state, federal and private grants of over twenty million dollars. She earned an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Washington University in St. Louis, and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She has professional certification from the Grants Professional Certification (GPC) Institute and is a board member of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Association of Grant Professionals.
