According to a recent survey of grantmakers, between 40% and 75% of the proposals that they receive do not fit their guidelines. It is now recognized that the more thoroughly you conduct your research, ask smart questions, and cultivate foundation contacts, the more your organization will stand out from the crowd.

This session will cover the following topics:
  • Prospecting for new money: how to find suitable grantmakers in expected and unexpected places
  • Computer resources and technology: where to find the best information on grantmakers on the web
  • Making sense of foundation guidelines: and how to read between the lines
  • Is there a fit: how to decide whether a foundation's priorities are compatible with your mission
This session is ideal for beginning grant seekers who are getting their feet wet, and need step by step guidance on how to find appropriate  funding.
Speakers for this session:

Charles Huschle
Foundations Officer
Families First Parenting Programs

In his current position, Charles conducts grant research, writes grant proposals and reports, and maintains relationships with corporate and foundation officers. He has a successful track record of meeting grant goals despite the current economic circumstances. He has a broad range of experience in nonprofits, from writing grant proposals and contributing to annual reports, to supervising staff and interns, running meetings, planning major events and managing financial information. In addition to his current work at Families First, Charles has donated time, and worked as a consultant, for the Boston Medical Center, MIT’s Prajnapaya Foundation, the Lung Cancer Alliance, and Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation.

Kate Lessard
Senior Development Associate

For the past four years, Kate has worked in MIT’s Office of Foundation Relations securing grants for the School of Engineering, MIT Energy Initiative, environmental activities, and the MIT Libraries. Kate manages a portfolio of several local and national foundations. She also regularly identifies foundation prospects and new and emerging foundations with the potential to make significant contributions to MIT. Prior to joining MIT, Kate worked as a development associate at the National Center of Family Homelessness. Kate is currently an MBA candidate at the Simmons School of Management.

Chris Masalsky
Grants Coordinator
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay

Chris has written over $5 Million in successful public and private grant proposals for schools, human service agencies and non-profit organizations over the past decade. In his most recent role as Grants Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay (BBBSMB), Chris has secured several new foundation and corporate grants while streamlining the agency’s proposal writing systems. As a result, BBBSMB has maintained its proposal-based funding level in FY09 – despite the economic crisis and its negative impact on giving - and anticipates a significant increase in FY10. Chris holds a B.S. in Cognitive Science from M.I.T. and an M.S. from Northeastern University, and specializes in grant funding research and analysis.
