Social media is beginning to transform non-profits both in the way they work as well as the relationships they have with their members and donors. Now more than ever you need to combine peer-to-peer fundraising with social media tools.
 
In this session we will examine the following:
 
- The role of social media in building a brand for your nonprofit
- An overview of social media tools: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Blogging Basics
- Combining social media with peer-to-peer fundraising
- Effectively using social media to cut marketing and promotional costs
- How “cause marketing” with various social media can build donations and gain new volunteers
-Creating a social media outcome measurement plan
 
If you have never used Facebook, Twitter or other social media outlets as part of your fundraising efforts, this session will educate you on what is involved, how much time it takes, and whether it is worth the effort. Join us to learn how you can make Social Media work for your organization.

Speakers for this session:

Laura Flannery
Communications Manager
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)

Laura has been involved in public relations and communications for seven years. In her current position she is responsible for using social media to actively promote the organization, its campaigns and projects to the U.S. media and public. At WSPA, Laura also leads the integration of messaging across the programs, fundraising and communications department, as well as the messaging of the organization's print materials, website, microsites and social network sites. She also works closely with WSPA HQ (in London) and other WSPA communications managers across the world to manage and produce communications assets. Previously, as Senior Account Representative at Lois Paul & Partners, Laura was responsible for media and analyst relations activities for several high technology and life sciences companies. In this role, she developed and implemented social media plans for clients - including blogs, Twitter, Facebook and Linked In. She also wrote a variety of press releases, blog entries, speaking, and award submissions. Laura earned a B.S. in Public Relations from University of Florida and a M.A. in Mass Communications from University of Florida.

Ben Waxman
Executive Director
Mental Health and Addiction Network

Ben has 22 years of fundraising experience. In his current role he is responsible for building an online network using social media tools to improve fundraising capacity for his organization’s charity members. Concurrently, as President at Benjamin Waxman Communications he is responsible for client development, social media management, marketing, communications, fundraising strategy and plan implementation. Previously at Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, he served as Director of Community Development where he was responsible for developing programs to increase collaboration between regional non-profits and for-profits. Ben currently serves as Board Member for Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC), North Shore Technology Council, Past President for Salem Main Streets Initiative, National Historic Trust economic development program, and Washington DC Metropolitan Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations. He earned a BA in English from Wesleyan University and an MBA from Northeastern University.

Catherine Weber
President
Weber Media Partners, LLC

Catherine has been involved in marketing for 22 years. She provides social media marketing strategy development and implementation including, training webinars, corporate social media guidelines, blog launches and optimization, microblogging, video and podcast programs, and social media monitoring. Previously, as Director of Interactive Marketing at Hurwitz Group, Catherine oversaw interactive programs for research and consulting, and developed online surveys and other sales tools to deliver leads to the sales team. Before that, she worked as Director of Marketing Communications at AP Engines. In this role, she was responsible for all aspects of marketing, including print and digital communications, public relations and event management. Catherine currently serves as Marketing Consultant for Facing Cancer Together. There she provides start up marketing for a new non-profit, founded by clinicians from the former Wellness Community. She worked with the organization to build a online social community for members, and used Facebook to promote a fundraising event and their new organizational website. She earned MA in Critical and Creative Thinking from UMass Boston and a BA in Communications Studies from Emerson College. She is a member of AMA Boston, the Massachusetts Interactive Media Exchange and The Art Center at Southborough.
