Winning proposals: a tour of three successful case studies
 

Even when you understand the principles of effective proposal writing, it can still be challenging to understand why a certain proposal stands out above the others. In this session, we will take you on a tour of four winners so that you can learn what makes a proposal truly fundable:

The session will provide an advanced analysis of tone, writing style and format, and includes a discussion of the following topics:
  • Building the case for support: how to make a favorable impression from the outset
  • Sustainability: giving funders the comfort they need that you will be around after they leave
  • Testimonials: using the power of stories to create a strong impression
  • Project outcomes: describing outcomes in a way that the funder can immediately understand them
  • Project budgets: avoiding the pitfalls that bedevil this section of the proposal
  • Sources of support: what is the funder looking for here, and what if you don't have them?
This session is intended as a follow-on to the first session on proposal writing.
Speakers for this session:

Karen Watkins-Watts
Grants Administrator
Brockton Public Schools

Karen Watkins-Watts has been involved in grant writing and development for over 15 years. In her current position as Grants Administrator for the Brockton Public Schools, she is responsible for grant writing and administrative oversight of state, federal and private grants. Karen previously worked as Development Manager for a community-based health center where she won grants to advance the health center's mission to provide comprehensive health services for a diverse, underserved urban population. Prior to that, she was Founder/Executive Director of TelTemps Training Resources, Inc., a successful private, post-secondary career school, certified by the state Department of Higher Education. Her efforts were recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor's Exemplary Public Interest Contribution (EPIC) Award as a model of collaborative workforce development. Karen currently serves as Vice President for the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Association of Grant Professionals and board member of the Massachusetts Service Alliance. She earned her M.B.A. in Finance & Marketing from Southern Illinois University and a B.S. in Business Administration from Truman State University.
