As the grant seeking process becomes more and more competitive, it is  essential to understand what grantmakers are actually looking for when they decide whether or not to award a grant. This session offers an unusual opportunity to hear directly from a variety of community, private and family foundation funders. Grantmakers from a variety of private, community and family foundations will participate in a panel discussion. Issues we will explore with the panelists include:
  • Foundation culture: what kinds of projects do grantmakers like to fund?
  • Winning proposals: what makes them stand out?
  • Foundation guidelines: are they set in stone?
  • Building the relationship: what gives foundations confidence in the organizations they fund?
Whether you have been securing grants for decades or are just starting out, the panel discussion will provide you with a valuable view of the grantmaking world from the point of view of the grantmaker.

Speakers for this session:

Jacqueline Boas
Foundation Administrator, Community Affairs
Boston Scientific (BSC)

Jacqueline has over 10 years in grantmaking, fundraising and events in both the for-profit and non-profit arenas. Currently, she is the key administrator for the Boston Scientific Foundation in Natick, MA. Since 2002, the BSC Foundation has donated more than $14 million to more than 350 charitable organizations nationally in an effort to improve health and educational opportunity for those in need. The Foundation also provides medical fellowships and scholarships to the children of Boston Scientific employees. In addition, Jacqueline helps to drive overall corporate citizenship activities at Boston Scientific including strategic philanthropic efforts and volunteerism. Prior to this role, Jacqueline was an Independent Consultant working with nonprofits where she advised them on their fundraising strategy. Jacqueline earned her MBA from Simmons School of Management, her MA in Social Anthropology from Columbia University and BA from Syracuse University in Anthropology.

Kathryn Everett
Executive Director
The Lynch Foundation

Katie is the Executive Director of the Lynch Foundation, a charitable foundation that provides assistance to programs primarily in Massachusetts with an emphasis on education, culture and historic preservation, healthcare and medical research, and religious and educational efforts of the Roman Catholic Church. Katie began her work for the Lynch family in 1997 and was appointed Executive Director of The Lynch Foundation in 2001. Under her direction the foundation has made grants in excess of $40 million to local, national and international charities. She manages a staff of three professionals who support her in this work. Kathryn currently serves as a member of the Boston Education Funders, the Boston School Yard Funders Collaborative, the Catholic Schools Foundation - Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, and is the Co-Chair of the South Shore YMCA Strong Kids Connecting Communities 2010 Event. She earned Bachelors in Business from Boston College. Katie is a member of Association of Small Foundation, Boston Education Funders, and Philanthropy Roundtables.

Andrea Martinez
Program Officer
The Boston Foundation

Andrea has been involved in grantmaking for four years. In her current position, she is responsible for all aspects of capacity building for the Foundation’s nonprofit sector, as well as oversight and management of all small grants programs and grantee relations. As part of her work, she oversees the Foundation’s effort to reposition Boston’s nonprofit sector through research, educational forums, workshops, information sharing on resources, strategic grantmaking, and capacity building of nonprofits. She is also responsible for the development and implementation of special initiatives and projects that will enhance the Foundation's work in Greater Boston's communities. Previously, as Project Coordinator at Children's Hospital Boston, Andrea was responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of the Indivo project which is the original personally controlled health record (PCHR) system. Andrea currently serves as Board Member for The Hyde Square Task Force Black Ministerial Alliance's Think Tank Executive Service Corps of New England Advisory Board Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy Steering Committee Mentor for Boston University's Institute for Nonprofit Management and Leadership. She earned Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Connecticut and a Master's Degree in Public Health from Florida State University. She is a member of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy.

David Shapiro
President and CEO (Panel Moderator)
Mass Mentoring Partnership

Through roles at the USGA Foundation, American Red Cross of Mass Bay, and Mass Mentoring, David has held strategic management positions in national grant-making, the spectrum of development, and overall non-profit management for over 15 years. In late 2004, Shapiro became President & CEO of Mass Mentoring Partnership, the state’s umbrella organization for youth mentoring. Shapiro is charged with building operational and financial infrastructure, ensuring that MMP is leveraging and maximizing investments in the field, operating impactful mentor recruitment campaigns, and providing innovative training and consulting services to the 130+ mentoring programs in its statewide network serving almost 20,000 young people. MMP seeks to double the number of young people in quality structured mentoring relationships by 2013. Shapiro is on the boards of Mass Non-Profit Net, Common Impact, Association of Fundraising Professionals, and Friends of the Children- Boston. David graduated with a BA from Amherst College and double majored in Political Science and English. He lives in Jamaica Plain with his wife Kristin and two boys, Brennan and Jack.
